Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What type of instruments tie in with Montessori methods? I have been looking on ebay at some instruments, percussion, small drum etc and they are very well priced. Are these the sort of instuments Montessori advocates? (I have two birthdays at the end of the month for my little ones, very timely )

Erin,
The Montessori classrooms are usually associated with bells, but those can be really pricey! I think most of us here have found ways of getting around that because I believe Montessori was really about allowing the child become familiar with pitch and recognition of notes. I'd say go for it on any musical instruments, because I'm a big believer that music wires the brain. We have a full size keyboard, bells, lap harp, guitars, drum and other rhythm instruments, recorder, and some bagpipe chanters!

Lori at Montessori For Everyone has done a really informative 3 part series on music!! Sounds right up your alley. HTH - good luck bidding on your instruments!

In part three of Lori's music series there is a link for playing Montessori bells on line- so cool, and a great way to introduce your kids to the bells without any investment.

Yes! Rhythm instruments are part of what Lori is writing about in her series. You could use a drum, triangle, jingle bells, maracas, rhythm sticks, or pots-and-pans for that matter! And for pitch you could get an inexpensive xylophone (we got ours from a toy store, I believe)or even a toy electronic keyboard. As long as the notes are true, it should work for simple listening exercises and basic note reading.
