So we took Colin in for his 6 month well-check this evening. He's growing longer, but he is only 12 lbs., 2 oz. The doctor wants to bring him back next month for a weight check since he has fallen off the chart for weight. If he isn't picking back up on the weight gain, she's going to want to do some tests. She suggested maybe supplementing with 1 bottle of formula each day and increasing the amount of times he eats food during the day as well.
If you wouldn't mind saying a prayer for little Colin to kick in with the weight gain. Granted he was over 4 weeks early, and had to deal with the whole Vicodin
thing, but I really pray that he's just a little peanut.

Praying for you, Cindy and for Colin. You've certainly hit your share of road bumps since the last part of your pregnancy, haven't you.
I know you didn't specifically ask for info but I have worked with lots of moms and babies who have had small baby/low weight gain situations and had some thoughts.
You mentioned the recommendation of the doctor to increase the amount of times he eats foods each day. I'm assuming the doc means solid foods. How much is he currently taking as solid food? Though solids are usually started in the middle of the first year, milk is still the primary food for infants for that first year. I'm always leary of trying to increase solids too rapidly, or too early, as it fills babies up with a less nutrionally balanced food and can reduce milk supply. The typical early foods are not usually high in calories anyway - things like rice cereal, vegetables tend to fill up a baby but are low in calories. If you can focus on more calorie packed, high nutrition foods that is better than high volume.
Have they talked to you about breastfeeding management at all before jumping to formula supplementation? If we are trying to increase milk intake, the more complete food is mom's own breastmilk. Working to increase frequency or duration of feedings can help increase intake as long as mother's supply responds accordingly. It can sometimes be more challenging with the distractable 6 month old, but there are many tips and techniques to help with that.
Also, it would be good to look at supply and some of the ways to boost supply (in addition to increasing nursing time) if reduced supply is a contributor.
Another thing to consider is family history. What was your nursing experience with the older boys and their weight gain. Any patterns? How about other genetic factors - parent's growth rates, etc.?
Are you connected with any local support, like through La Leche League? There are bound to be other mothers who have had a sitution like you are going through. I know in our groups there are always some low gaining/off the chart babies in attendance at any given time. It really can be helpful to have the support of someone who has been there. It's a good way to find out what has helped other mothers. Sometimes it's breastfeeding management, sometimes nutritional options, looking at mom's supply issues, etc.
Again, I'll be praying. PM me if you want more info or resources.

Cindy, I'm praying for you and Colin. I second what Mary M. has written. Here is an article from kellymom.com that shares some tips for infant weight gain. Please do get some local support if possible. Often it can be helpful to have a visit with a LLL Leader or Lactation Consultant because they can listen to your whole story and help you to come up with a pro-active plan of action that is focused on increasing your milk supply and baby intake, while also helping to rule out other issues. Often this is all a mom and baby needs to be confident in their situation and to make the very best of it.
Love,
