Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies , well we have just inherited a spinning wheel ! My mother's cousin had borrowed it and just returned it to my mother brought it all the way back from NY so it has been around . My grandmother ordred it from Montreal and mum thinks it is made of maple .
Well it is a lovely site but I can't even knit
so I am thinkinjg this will be an adventures winter project for the boys and I . it of course appeals to them because of the spinning aspect the wheel looks like that of a ships wheel I think
you can see a ic on our blog I posted it today
http://anaturalhistoryhome.blogspot.com/
what I really need to know is .How do I do this spinning ! Help !
books & websites . I am very visual .Tend not to get things well if not being able to see a diagram or demo .
Any help you offer will be most welcome .
Thanks , Rox

Books were of little use to me until I sat next to someone spinning. Once I got the hang of it, the written descriptions made sense.

The Alden Amos Big Book of Spinning is interesting but was too complex for me to start with; I actually like the Spinner's Companion by Bobbie Irwin. It is a spiral bound flip book that helped for my beginning efforts.

If you cannot find a fiber shop, how about some county fairs or Heritage Days or societies. At our fair there is sheep judging. The judging is usually for meat sheep but there is often a shearer showing his techniques so there might be some contacts there and maybe a bit of wool.
Maybe do a search of a knitting or fiber guild (my cousin in law's guild regualrly takes trips to Canada, towards Toronto)
Maybe a google search for Sheep and Wool festivals would help too.
Interwaeve Press publishes Spin Off which might have some online sources or you could get one copy of the mag for inspiration/links.

Oh Viv thanks .
I think maybe if I call the crafts guild I may be able to hook up with someone .
I love the little country fairs . Fun to just go and who knows what we might find .
Great suggestions . Thanks again . Roxie

Play music with a good, distinctive beat when learning to spin. Totally helped my rhythm which resulted in a much more uniform thread.

I second Viv I needed to sit with other women and watch them closely. At first you think you will never get it, I wanted to throw my first wheel out the window, then one day it clicked and I have been addicted ever since. I will warn you if you are prone to loving natural fibers you could end up like me and owning 7 wheels    I have since sold some off, but I love the fiber world and all its riches.....Happy spinning!

There is really nothing that compares to watching and trying. A book can't adequately show you, and you certainly don't get to feel the right twist and thickness from books. I learned how to sping about 100 years ago when I was a teenager.

I hope we will one day have the space for a wheel and a loom. I can't wait to see what you come up with, so please post an update.

Then, of course, there is dying...
