Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'd like to use these books with our United States history/geography this year.

Would anyone care to share ideas and links and such around these books?

I'll start by noting that he had some other lesser known works that might be worth a read:
Little Big Bye-and-Bye [1926]
Claws of the Thunderbird [1928]
Rocky Billy [1928]
Choo-Me-Shoo [1928]
Twins Who Flew Around the World [1930]
Book of Cowboys [1932]
Book of Indians [1935]
Little Buffalo Boy [1939]

Are you wanting ideas for the better known books as well, or just the ones you listed?

We plan on using Book of Indians this summer. I'm going to read it out loud primarily to my sons, ages 10, 8 and 7. I'm betting the 5 year old ds will come in and out and maybe even the 12 yrold dd...but who knows.

Anyways...my plan is probably not too exciting, but I wanted it low-key and easy to pull-off in the summer.

week1- read chap. 1 - prepare a map to chart where the 4 different Indian divisions (that he covers) lived

week2- read chap2 - Eastern Indians
      make a wigwam
begin a chart to compare the 4 different divisions (use large posterboard) - compare dwellings, dress, food/hunting, women's roles
read chap 3 and 4 for enjoyment

week3 - read chap5 - Plains Indians
      make a tee-pee and/or mound home
      continue with chart
read chap6 and 7 for enjoyment

week4 - read chap8 - Desert Indians
       make clay pottery and/or pueblo
       continue with chart
read chap 9 and 10 for enjoyment

week5 - read chap 11 - Northwestern Indians
make a totem-pole (maybe I'll be real brave an try whittling )
        continue with chart
read chap 12 and 13 for enjoyment

That's it!

I wanted to do it over the summer because we finished the year with Exploration of the New World. So I wanted to start next year off with Jamestown and the colonies, but I wanted the Indians to be done, so to speak.

I had never heard of those other books you have listed. I happened upon this old book somehow...I think I got it off ebay several years ago.

Anyways, I don't know if that's helpful...but it will work for the small effort I want expend this summer on it (lazy heh?)

Have fun!

I call anything that doesn't require me to go out to the library for more books and/or Michaels for more supplies...well we'll probably hit the woods for some sticks for totem poles...is low key for me...anything that doesn't need me to use the car!!!

Not much help here, but we are currently reading Pagoo by Holling C. Holling and I LOVE IT. The kids love it. It has been a great summer unit study since it focuses on sea life and tide pools, etc.

I have a feeling most of his books are grand.
