That's "hello" (plural) in Magyar.
For "hello" in any (the author claims to be missing thousands, but she covers sooo many!) language, modern or ancient,
Also, find out how to say "thank you" ,please , goodbye , and more...

I haven't seen a subject heading like that since the night I wrote to tell you Neil had spilled coffee on my keyboard!
Thanks for the great link!

Great stuff here, although I wish she had a pronunciation key for all of them.

So far, I think my favorite language is Basque-Icelandic Pidgin, where "hello" is "Ungetorre."

I'm Basque but hadn't heard of a "Basque-Icelandic Pidgin" language, so when I saw this I did a little research. I knew that the Basques had likely been in North America very early on when the Vikings were also, but didn't know that there was a "language" associated with this connection. It was interesting to see the connection in old place names in Canada.
BTW, Ungetorre does have a very Basque sound to it although it is nothing like the word that the Basques use for "hello."
This thread reminded me of what we did at Christmas this year. Someone on the CCM group posted a link to a site that had Merry Christmas in various languages. I made big signs of each "Merry Christmas" saying in the languages of our family's cultures (Basque & Polish from my side and Portuguese from my husband's side - and German for my BIL since he was here with my sister and their kids). We tacked them to the doors. It was fun for the kids to see and practice sayings in the languages of their cultural background and it was a conversation starter for guests visiting.
Now I think I'll keep doing it for other sayings and holidays (if I remember!)

My eccentric but very interesting, sculptress, globe-trottin' aunt claims that all you need to know when you visit a foreign country are 15 expressions:
Please
Thank you
How are you?
Fine, thank you, and you?
Hello/Good day
Good Bye
It is beautiful
I am
Hungry
Thirsty
Lost
I am looking for
I need
Where is/Where are
Very good!
She says that if you can count to 20 that is an added bonus!

I wonder, does everyone have a "globe-trottin' aunt? I do! She has always been so disappointed that I got married at 19 and had children right away. I was her protege

Reminds me of Miss Rumphius.
Karen T (and no, I don't have a globe-trotting aunt, but I had a grandmother who sort of fit the bill - she was a photographer/journalist in WWII)

Yes. Beautiful picture book about a woman who travels the world and then settles down to make her own corner of it more beautiful ... (by the way, I stumbled on this thread when I clicked on active topics this morning -- thought I'd clicked on "since yesterday" but instead got the last six months! I thought it looked like an awful lot of discussion for just 24 hours!)
