Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a 2 yo niece that needs a birthday gift. This is a family that has everything, so book is the definite choice. I want a good picture book, something that can be read to her now, but also she will enjoy later. We talk about them all the time, but my brain is freezing. Something not too overtly religious is probably good, too.

We have loved The Quiltmaker's Gift and The Magic Hill, these tend to span so many ages and are truly beautiful picture books!!

The Princess and the Kiss? It is something that the young and old can read and relate/learn from...actually to pick it up in later teens, they will understand in a more complete way then...

I always think The Princess and the Kiss is a gift you can give to Catholics, christians, any faith, atheists, anyone! - it is about purity and that is relevant to everyone...

This is our no. 1 gift we give to girls. We give it as a baptismal gift, for birthdays of all ages and last year I gave it to one of my goddaughter's who is nearly entering her teenage years - I'm always needing to buy more copies.

How about Jan Brett books? The pictures are captivating and you see more and more the longer you look. We like the hedgie books, the troll ones, Fritz and the Beautiful horses, the Umbrella, and really all of them are marvelous. The same goes for Graeme Base. The more you look the more there is to see. Animalia is a classic and we love My Grandma lived in Gooligulch. Sign of the Seahorse was not a hit with the youngers, but they like it as they get older.I recently gave the Watering Hole to a 3 yo niece!

My very favorite book of all time (since I was a young child) is The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter by Evelyn Scott.

It has beautiful illustrations. It was out of print for a long time and in the past couple of years has come back into print.

Now that I am an adult I especially appreciate how they have 12 children (all girls except one boy!) and they do everything together. I never realized as a child how it was such a great pro-family book (I only have 1 sibling, maybe that is why as a child I loved it so much, imagining how wonderful it would be to have more siblings).

Happy shopping! (& reading!)
