What is a good online site to purchase a birdfeeder and seed for backyard birds? I'm not finding anything good locally, and part of the problem is that I don't know exactly what I want. Something that the kids can handle and that doesn't have to be hung, b/c we have no good spot to hang one. Thanks.

I haven't bought one yet, because I need a squirrel proof feeder (read: expensive). Nancy (Guitarnan) recommended Wild Birds Unlimited for that. There was a store nearby and I couldn't get over the options. You could do a pole feeder, either just a pole and hang the feeders on hooks or a feeder on top of the pole.

Do you have a deck? There are deck feeders, also.

We got a pretty wrought iron pole that was very easy to stick in the ground, and holds 2 feeders. There were others that held 4. You can see a pic of mine (and all our goldfinches) here.

ETA: We got it at our local farm supply store, but I've seen them elsewhere.

Marrianne do you want a really good looking feeder or one that the kids can use easily
I say this because about 5 yrs ago I made a birdfeeder with Indigo out of a pop bottle .we hung it up and it was such a pain to fill take down etc. the birds never came to it either .
Then two yrs ago I thought how much I love the birds and wanted to feed them .I looked at how my mum just nailed down a small borad outside on her deck railing .she'd put seed and bread crumbs out and she could watch the birds all winter out her kitchen window .

So Ilooked out my window where the birds tend to be the most its in the back yard under our maple tree where our shed also sits . Indigo climbs up there all the time its how we discovered the maple tree dripping and learned to make male suryp so I got a bag of birdseed and a beautiful bird book took a garbeg can lid filled it with bird seed and put it atop the shed roof . Did it work .Yep the kids can change the seed and they just dump the old seed out under the tree .
Our bird bath also is made from an old garbage can lid that sits atop of an old wash tub . I took a pic of it for our blog .It sits right beside the rose bush and the blue jays go nuts in it I never saw such piggy birds
Also the best bird house we've made was from the book carpentry for children by Leslie Walker . ds had great fun making it and painting it .
Have fun . Much Love Rox
ps . we don'tmind feeding squirels along with the birds here we have to take what wildlife we can get
