I am trying to organize our cds which have increased over the large couple of years - at present I have baskets arranged by Jim Weiss/storytelling, classical music, rosary/liturgical year etc - and I have them on a low table with the little cd player so that the kids can use them. But they are not tidy or easy to find.
Please share any ideas you have.

I have them separated by my music, kids music, school music, and then alphabetically.
My music is the stuff I just can't let go of (Def Leppard, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd) and kids music is different Christian rock-type music. School music is all the marches and classics that we use.

I had to separate the cd from the case and start storing them in those books that hold 50 or so cds at a time. I hated letting go of the case, but in the end practicality had to win. I tried to take the paper insert out of the plastic case and store it in the same pocket as the cd.
It has been helpful having the computer/educational cd's together in one notebook next to the computer - the music cd's together in a notebook next to the cd player, etc. Also, when (not if) the kids abuse a cd , I take possession of the entire notebook of cd's and the kids have to "check out" a cd library style. This ensures that cd's are returned right after use.
I do keep certain cd's with their cases, like the collection of classical music, since there is helpful info on the cd case that is somehow hermetically sealed to the plastic case.

I don't want to hijack this thread, because I would be interested in hearing what everyone says...big problem here too!
However, my added problem is that when my ds's (6 & 5) use CD's they usually end up scrached  . I would love to leave them out and accessable, but I can't. Has anyone had luck overcomming this on top of keeping the CD's organized?

I tried to do this last year and was all excited about it, but then someone told me that with the CDs touching something, like cloth (in the transferred-to-case) they won't last as long. Whereas in the original case, they are "floating" and not touching anything. I never did follow up on this to see if this was indeed true.
Does anyone know?

I discovered that Stride Rite shoe boxes are the perfect width for storing cd's. My kids love to take them in and out of the boxes because they fit so neatly. I have been meaning to cover the boxes with different colored paper (red for kids music, blue for religious, green for Christmas) but I haven't gotten that organized yet.

we have clear 'CD' boxes. one for me, one for dh, one for kids stuff and one for religious talks and prayers.
these boxed stack well and I keep them in our game closet.
I also have a notebook thingy to take in the car with our favorite cds.
