I always thought that I didn't like coffee. I have never owned a coffee maker and the only time I have made coffee was when it was part of my job 12 years or so ago.
I have found that I do like coffee so long as it is of the Starbucks flavored type. I looked a bit at coffee makers etc but really I am just clueless. I don't know what I would need to make the Starbucks type coffee at home.
Suggestions please?

my dh perfected it...he is a coffee addict lol...
we have a basic esspresso maker.
so he grinds fresh beans (usually has about a four to five days of ground beans ready for the week)
then loads up machine (per instruction to particular machine)
next he pours milk into a two cup pyrex and blends with a hand/smoothie mixer. he does this instead of using the steamer on the side of the machine for faster/easier clean up. he heats up the milk in the micro wave
he then brews the coffee into an small little dish
he prepares his coffee cup with what ever flavor, usually chocolate.
then when the coffee and milk are done, they go into the coffee cup.
a bit of foam from the milk or whipped cream go on top.
now I love to make these, but have tried to cut back because of all the additives, sugar etc... for treats I keep a small bottle of flavored syrup (which you can find on the coffee aisle or places like Cost Plus World Market) on hand, instead of chocolate. I like vanilla lattes. you can get all kinds of flavors.
there are times when dh has made a pot of coffee rather than use the esspresso machine. and I have done the same thing, just with drip coffee. my 'coffee expert' doesn't think it tastes as good, but I do, lol.
enjoy

I never liked coffee because of the bitterness until we discovered the Alton Brown method of coffee brewing. We bought a Melitta manual coffeemaker for $5 on clearance. It's not Starbucks, but it also isn't bitter.
To make a poor man's cappucino we take extra strong brewed coffee and add warmed milk that has been shaken vigorously in a bottle until foamy. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the top and yum!

Our big thing now is french-pressing the coffee -- which you can do even when the power is out, so that's a good thing (assuming you have a way to heat water, that is). French Press makes a GREAT strong cup of coffee -- that will also be good for iced coffee as the summer heats up....

There are tons of ways to make coffee.
I have found that bitterness comes from overheating the brewed coffee. A milder roast will also help. I find Starbucks bitter and prefer our French roast from Baltimore tea and coffee company, strong but not bitter.(See how subjective this all is?)
We French press at home and in the boat. If you want one cup, just make that amount so you aren't tempted to reheat for a hot second cup. OUr French press is insulated.
At the lake the cousins always have used a Melita with Maxwell House--it tastes great there--go figure.
And when camping or when without pawer a stainless steel percolater makes great coffee.
For iced coffee we make coffe ice cubes. When you are ready for a drink, make a pot of coffee, add your sugar and cream to half a cup and then the coffee cubes to ice it, yum!

French Press is the yummiest but we had to pass on it due to Husband's cholesterol.
I am curious...has anyone ever tried one of those pod machines? The single serve kind like Senseo?

we found a french press really nice because I can't drink coffee and so we'd put on a pot of water and then dh could french press coffee and I could make an herbal tea or hot chocolate

I had forgotten about the French Press...I used to do this years ago.
Any links to the French Presses that y'all have? or all they all the same?

I'd go with the Frieling . Glass is too easily broken.

Okay so according to Alton Brown how many tablespoons would you put into a 12 cup coffee maker that makes 64 ounces? That seems like alot of scoops.
