Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What advice can anyone provide?

Has anyone purchased those fancy types of containers that you need to spin? What about the three bin approach? How much work is involved with each? I am not particularly interested in using the compost but more concerned about not putting all my fresh vegetable peels in the garbage! Any other advice?

Thanks,
Betsy

Loads of info here.

I don't know about any of the fancy ones. We've just got a basic compost bin. Two in fact, because one wasn't enough

The main thing is to make sure that you mix green stuff (grass cuttings, peelings etc) with woody stuff (twigs etc) so that the chemical mixture is right.

No big effort required -- just chuck it all in and wait for a few months for some lovely rich compost for your garden!

Can you tell I'm a fan?

So, do you need to stop at some point adding material and let it finish composting? Is this why you have two bins?

Thanks,
Betsy

Funny you should ask that now--I was just inspired yesterday to put this into action! Several book titles and some web sites included. We just started gardening, and I'm tired, too, of throwing food into the trash.

We've got two bins simply because one is full. Otherwise if you just keep on filling it up it means that half the bin might have compost that is ready and half might be still on the way.
