How do you tell if an egg is fresh or not? We buy farm "fresh" eggs, but occasionally we get a batch that looks a little strange-watery whites and mottled yolks.
I know these farmers have tons of eggs coming this time of year and I just wonder if we somtimes are getting an older batch. When are they not safe to eat?
Any tips?

I use the sink-or-float method. If you put the egg into cold water, a really fresh egg will sink quickly, an egg that is a little older (up to several weeks) will sink slower (these are better for hard-boiled, as the extra air pocket makes for easier peeling), and a bad egg will float.

yep.. my friend who sells some just told me that..
float test
put in cool water taller than the egg
if they lay down they are fresh
if they tilt or stand on end... boil or bake
if they float TOSS them

I think mottled yolks are fine. Fertile eggs look a little different, because I guess the chick could have been growing, which is kind of a weird thought know that I say it . . . . 
Fresh eggs have very "perky" yolks. They stand up in the pan and don't break as easily.

I've never seen a mottled yolk on eggs other than free range. I've just assumed this was a fertilized egg. I know they look a bit strange, but it's not because they are spoiled or anything. But, Sarah, I can imagine that anything that doesn't look *just right* might be hard for you to think about right now.

I also heard that the yolk should be nice and firm, very round. and the whites clear.
also....gather them yourself, lol. my friend has a farm and we get some of her eggs sometimes. they are delish!
