Someone was telling me the other day that it is now recommended not to eat peanut butter when pregnant or nursing, and not to give it to kids until they are about three. This is in response to the rise of kids with peanut allergies.

Anyone heard this? Do you have any input or opinions? It does seem that people are becoming more and more allergic to various foods.

Peanut butter is a staple around here. Cheap, easy and nutritious.

Well, I can only give you our story - I ate SO much peanut butter and eggs when I was pg with my first, because I didn't like meat but craved protein. Guess what she is allergic to? You got it - peanut butter and eggs. Same goes for my #3. I wised up (I thought) and instead of eating peanut butter and eggs, ate a lot of *almond* butter and dairy products. Yup - she is allergic to dairy products and almonds!!

If you have no allergies in your 7 kids, I wouldn't worry too much (I might cut down, but not totally avoid) but if you have allergies, then I think (personally) it is wise to avoid it while you are pregnant and nursing, particularly in the last trimester.

Hopefully someone else has more than anectodal info here. :)

We really don't have any allergies. Emily, #7, had a real problem with dairy as an infant, so I had to be dairy-free. In fact, I also have somewhat of a dairy intolerance, so I don't eat it as much as I used to.

That's interesting that you can pin down what you ate and what your kids are allergic to. I wonder why that sometimes happens.

Thanks for the anecdotal information! It's usually the best kind.

For most people, you can safely eat peanut butter. I had food allergies in my history and ended up with a child with food allergies.

The main recommendation is to avoid the peanuts in the 3rd trimester, which is what I'll try to do. I don't do peanut butter too much anyway, but it's a great, fast and easy protein source when I'm desperate.

When I was pregnant with my son I ate a lot of eggs. I have lactose intolerance and don't really "like" dairy, but forced myself to eat more during the pregnancy. The wheat I didn't go overboard, as I was keeping my carbs down. But he now has wheat, eggs, and milk allergies.

The official advice here is to avoid peanuts during pregnancy. If you, your dh or other children have allergies, asthma or exczema, then peanuts should also be avoided while nursing.

Interesting! I've eaten 2 eggs/day for 8 of my pregnancies now (so this included while nursing too ) and 3 of the 8 children have exczema and 1 has an egg allergy. I've also ate tons of peanutbutter during pregnancy and beyond, no peanut allergies. I just always assumed that the exczema was hereditary since I have it pretty bad, then I began to notice a dairy connection in of the children.

Ruling out eggs, milk, and nuts makes the Brewer diet difficult!

I have a friend who (4 years ago now) found a study out of England that found a connection between food allergies and mothers and babies who both had active eczema while breastfeeding. The study only had about 30 participants though, so it was hardly conclusive. I've never heard of any others.

Eczema, food allergies, asthma go hand in hand apparently although not in our family. Also, it is common for people to become lactose intolerant as they get older, so my current lactose intolerance isn't necessarily related to the fact that my babies are until about 18 months old. If lactose intolernance bothers you, I find acidophillus pills helpful. (can't have my coffee without milk )

My guess is that this would depend on family history. I eat a decent amt of pb and did while pg and nursing. Neither DH nor I have any food allergies in our families, so I wasn't really concerned about it. I think that DD first inadvertently got pb as an 18month old (it was in a Chinese dish). But, if we had any family history of allergies I would definitely be more careful. I also think it helps to do things in moderation. If you are pg and craving protein and pb is a staple, why not throw some other nut/seed butters into the mix, like cashew (so good it seems like a dessert ), tahini, almond, etc.

Kind of the same story here. Pregnant with ds I ate LOTS of dairy-for the calcium and protein, etc. He was allergic to milk protein--finally outgrew it about 5 years. When pregnant with dd I steered clear of dairy-I still ate it every once in awhile, just not the ice cream every night after dinner and cheese at every meal, etc.    So, I replaced the protein missing in my diet with peanut butter and eggs. She ended up being allergic to them(And chocolate, sigh). She has finally outgrown the eggs and chocolate but we are still dealing with the peanut butter issue. If I had to do it again I'd steer clear of dairy again because Ds's allergy was a lot harder to deal with than just eggs and peanut butter. OR try one of those rotation type diets. Eggs were hard, but not as hard to eliminate as milk proteins--they are in EVERYTHING. I was making my own bread and we(since I was nursing him past 1 year)we could eat very little processed foods. I read so many labels--grocery shopping was a nightmare. Anyhow, that is my story and I have heard that your diet when pregnant CAN impact allergies-but I think it also depends on family history since I have a few allergies myself.
