I recently purchased the mass kit from OFH, and it has been WONDERFUL!!! The kids are responding to our "atrium" like nothing else! 
But, I am wondering if I ought to let them "play mass" with this set. (They like to use fruit tea and crackers, etc. etc.) Should I just get something that they can play with?
I ask not only as a practical q. but also because Montessori was so big on not letting the kids play with materials (using the wrong way).

I've been wondering the same thing!! 
Not Montessori or CGS trained, BUT...I think when I'm done with the third presentation, I will let them "play" with supervision because they'll know how to use it (even my 2 yo. who has been very good!!)
And to me, it seems it would be good to do so -- and I KNOW they will be reverent (Moira's presentations are great!) What better imaginative play?!
But I'm not sure about pouring stuff and using crackers for hosts... I just haven't thought about that part yet.

As far as the Montessori perspective, I believe there was only *work* with the materials and that would include something like the beautiful Mass Kits as well.
We have not had *play time* with our Mass Kit, but I really think it's a personal choice. Whatever seems to be working for your little ones and what you think is best  should be up to you!!

I let the girls "play".....meaning touching, moving the pieces around, etc.....maybe not in exactly the way we did during the presentation, but exploring the pieces.....playing Mass.
I don't let them pretend with them....imagine that they are just like a tea set or dihes, etc. They have other dishes/tea sets for that.

My kids all play Mass. I let them use juice or colored water, crackers, cookies, whatever. Our priest wrote up a tri-fold Order of the Mass for our parish use, and he gave the kids a few. This past week, they set up the kit in the backyard, chose Bible stories, and followed the order of the mass. I was inside where I could see, and when their reverence started to slip, we put it away.
One thing is that the pieces don't stay as shiny if you get them wet. Also, only our boys get to be priests or altar servers, fwiw.

"You may use these things to have a pretend Mass" vs. "You may play with these things"
I only let them work with the Mass kit without me after 2 or 3 presentations by me. I don't have the albums so I don't know if that's the correct thing to do. I just thought I would show them how to use the items correctly and then get out of their way.
We have no boys, so everyone gets to take turns being Father. We have talked about the fact that only boys can grow up and be priests. Now, whenever a boy comes to visit/play, he is immediately recruited into the role! Tends to spice up play dates with our fundamental Protestant homeschool support group friends!!  We are working on a "Mass book" to use with the kit.
As an aside-my dh wasn't too sure about the purchase of the kit. I think he saw it as irreverent to have a pretend Mass. He was present for the presentations and loved watching our girls work with the materials. He would like to buy a few kits to donate to our parish for use in the RE classrooms! (if only we could get the signatures we are waiting for...)

Well, ladies, thanks for the input here.
I think I'll try to find something else for them to "play mass" with and keep the distinction between that and "atrium work" clear.
Sounds like maybe we should work on a "mass book" too!
