Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My boys are really interested in woodworking and want to do some projects over the summer and next year. This year they did some of the Hearthsong projects - treasure chest and toolbox.

Does anyone have some good ideas for books/kits? The boys will be 8 in the summer.

Also - dh does not have a tool room or garage workshop. Can you share ideas for how to practically do woodwork - do I need to get some kind of junior tool bench in the basement?

Thanks

Marilyn,
Do you have a Lowe's nearby? This may not be the woodworking that you are thinking of, but one Saturday a month they have a workshop for kids, and it is FREE! They supply aprons, safety goggles and the tools, as well as the project - bird house, race car, etc. My nephews are 10 and 7 and really enjoy those project days.

We have one here in Manassas, and they do it the second Saturday of the month.

Lowes is great, and Home Depot does them, too.
I have seen some nice woodworking kits at Toys R Us in the past, but not recently.
I think the tool bench is a great idea!

Know this may be a little late...

I just found out about the coolest books for whittling/ wood carving!
Chris Lubkemann is the author,
Little book of Whittling
and
Whittling Twigs and branches.

All you need is a pocket knife for this.

This guy is a REAL artist! You will be amazed.

These are available through amazon.

Hth,
CK

Clarissa,

THANKS for posting these:
The Little Book of Whittling: Passing Time on the Trail, on the Porch and Under the Stars and Whittling Twigs and Branches: Unique Bird, Flowers, Trees and More from Easy to Find Wood look like they'd be great for our camping adventures this summer. Thomas (8-1/2) will SOOOOO love doing this and then Maggie can paint 'em! THANKS!

Thanks for the ideas. I will get organized and call my local Home Depot or Lowes and dh will take the boys. Our only problem is that there are often sports on Sat mornings.

I will look at the books mentioned. Also researching the book "Woodworking for Kids" recommended in Montessori catalogs - and some of the things in Emmanuel Books catalog.
