Patty mentioned this on the FCL Yahoo Group and I just had to let you good ladies know. Seems there's a web-site called Children's Vinyl Records that has FREE, downloadable copies of the old kids' records from the 60s -- stories, songs, language -- a whole bunch of stuff. These were the records mom used to play for us while we played legos or built with lincoln logs or tinker toys.... these are fabulous.
Now, if I could just remember how to convert mp3 files to listenable in the car CD files .... anyone know?

I don't have time to find the instructions that I know I have (they are from homeschoolradioshows.com when you order mp3s from them) but in the mean time...
here is a link to instructions at cnet

My son used iTunes to burn the mp3 files to audio CD. These are his instructions -
Go to www.apple.com/iTunes and download iTunes 7 for free
and install it.
Now open iTunes and click the edit tab; open the preferences and click the advanced tab.
Click the burning tab and make sure the audio CD (not the data or mp3 Cd bubble) is checked.
Close iTunes.
Download the zipped mp3 files.
Open the file - right-click on one of the mp3 files and click open.
Select find program on the window.
Another window will open and iTunes should be at the top - double click it.
iTunes will open and the file will start too play. Do this with all the tracks you want to burn. Make a playlist of the tracks (file>new playlist) drag and drop the the tracks you want to burn to a CD.
insert a blank audio CD and push burn. The tracks will start burning to the disc, this will take about 5 or 6 minutes.
After the disc is done eject the CD and enjoy!
(this was written by the son and not the mom because she's not tech savvy)
I hope that helps. We've listened to the Gilbert and Sullivan and some of the Danny Kaye stories this afternoon. Thanks for sharing the link !
Blessings,
Kym

Mary,
Hi! I'm the one who shared the link on the FCL list. It really is a cool site!
We burned the mp3 files to CD's on our computer and they work just fine on our portable CD player and in the car, too. I am not sure if my son did anything special when he burned them, but I don't think so. (I'm a computer dunce.) I can ask him; he's at a college class right now.
Patty

Ok, finally, here are the directions I have. They are from www.homeschoolradioshows.com (A great resource for old radio shows - many of them free)
How to make Cassettes and CDs out of mp3s
