OK so we're having a little tangential discussion about geomagnetic reversals. What happens if there is a dipolar field collapse? Can humans survive it? Could the weakening geomagnetic field be responsible for ozone holes, polar cap melting? What effects could geomagnetic reversal have on everyday life?
Also, what causes geomagnetic reversals? Why are they irregular? Is it a natural cyclical occurance, or does some catastrophic event precipitate a reversal?
And if anyone can offer an easy homemade demonstration of the dynamo theory, I'd love to try it out!
An interesting sidenote - we were intrigued that, according to records, the Earth's magnetic strength was at its highest around the birth of Christ and seems to be diminishing as we approach what many believe to be the coming end times...
I'd like to collect comments and project ideas on my homeschooling weblog for more to view. Here is the permalink
Just fixed my weblog link... Duh to me - I forgot to close quotes.

What a great icon, Rebecca! Where did you get it?
When I read this, my thought was the icon, because these are very interesting questions about which I have no idea.

Did you watch the show on PBS about this? It was so incredibly facinating! One of my questions is, couldn't this have to something to do with the global warming thing? I have a ton of others. This show was so interesting.

We did see a program about this. And we all wonder the same things about global warming. Sure would make the alarmists look funny...

Have you seen "The Great Global Warming Swindle"?
I am not from the UK but I saw it on Youtube before it was taken off because they were sued by Channel 4 in Britain.
Oh, I was excited to hear some answers to Nissa's question so I pulled that icon off of our hard drive! LOL and I have a photobucket account... I thought this was a neat question, and I have no idea of the answer, but me and dh would love to know. We are together becoming science enthusiasts!
ETA the premise of The Great Global Warming Swindle is that the Earth warming is due to there being more activity of the sun, when there are less solar storms the Earth cools... Just an FYI... But I am really interested in the answer and don't want to change the topic!

Here are more questions. Couldn't it have an impact on skin cancers as well? Do we see that played out in the reported cases of skin cancers in the last hundred years? It seems to me that humans could survive it for awhile, but isn't our magnetic field what protects us from being pelted by solar debris and what keeps much solar radiation from harming us? I didn't get that reversals are caused by anything, more like they are natural occurences (which makes it even more curious that there hasn't been one in a really long time).
Ah, I love it when I can talk and talk and have no idea what I am saying...

Try these:
Homemade Demo of the Dynamo Theory
When North Goes South
Magnetic Storm
