I was hoping somebody here can help me. A few months ago an IRL friend watched a segment on EWTN. They had a guest doctor on, I think she was an obsectrican but not sure on that. She was discussing amongst other things how she has had wonderful success in treating women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome by treating the pancreas, not the reproductive system.

I need to find the name and contact details of that doctor. I have somebody needing any information she has, and her doctor here in Australia is most interested in learning more too Did anyone catch that show? Can help me? Thank you

Erin,

I didn't see it. But my sil has diabetes and PCOS, the diabetes appeared during her first pregnancy and didn't disappear afterward, and then so did the PCOS develop.

If you know the name of the program it was on, you could search the EWTN website for audio recordings of their shows. Do you know how to do that?

I don't know what show or what doctor, but it seems there is a lot of information "out there" on this...

Combating PCOS through diet

Working with a Nutritionist for PCOS

I have been dx'd with PCOS. There are a lot of more natural methods one can use, as well as more traditional methods of dealing with it.

I am on metformin, 2000mg/day (even during pregnancy). Women with PCOS run a MUCH higher risk of miscarriage, as well as developing gestational diabetes--the continued metformin use appears to drop the m/c rate to "normal" and the gestational diabetes risk is lowered considerably, too. I was combining natural remedies with the metformin use, and I have to wonder whether it was the combination that helped me to conceive.

Metformin is traditionally used for treatment of Insulin Resistance and diabetes, but I've not tested positive for either of those situations...

I have to say that there ARE ways of dealing with the infertility side of PCOS that don't involve using bcps, etc. It is being considered more and more a problem with the endocrine system--with insulin resistance issues being the catalyst, sending weight spiraling out of control and hormones following promptly. Not all women will have a weight problem, altho it is a typical trait.

For a non-Catholic board/forum on it, SoulCysters.com is a good site for PCOS information. There are a couple of threads in the forums, down in the "Faith and Healing" section...I'm in and out of there...just go there knowing NOT to expect a Catholic outlook on things like IVF, BCP usage, etc. It "IS" however a wonderful resource for dietary help, natural healing discussions, research, etc.

HTH someone

Rachel

Erin, I know Dr. Hilgers was on EWTN about a month ago. He does the NaPro and Creighton Method (similar/based on Billings) and runs the Paul VI Institute. I taped the show but didn't watch it in entirety to know if that was mentioned or not.

Rachel,

Could you share with us what natural remedies are you referring to? I have read Marilyn Shannon's book on Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition. Atkins also talk about how his diet helps those with PCOS. I know how hard it is to conceive with PCOS. You must be so happy to be blessed with so many children. Thank you so much for the link to the forum. It is packed with information!

Hi,
I am interested also in the natural remedies and diet. The new physician's assistant I am seeing thinks this may be a problem for me and has prescribed metformin. So far I haven't taken it as I am cautious of some of the side effects (anyone?) and wonder what it will do for me at my age, late 40s (I thought I was perimenopausal). I struggle with the inability to lose weight (in spite of low carb very healthy diet and exercise), have some history of ovarian cysts, miscarriages, and some of the other symptoms. I would love any info anyone can share on this! thanks

Hi,
My specialist (reproductive endocrinologist) feels that I show some signs of PCOS, although I am not very overweight and do not have cysts on my ovaries. At the very least, I do appear to be "insulin resistant", which can be a feature of PCOS. When I went to see him last winter and told him of my 8 miscarriages, high blood pressure issues, and history of gestational diabetes, he asked me if I would like to try metformin. I did, and I'm not sure whether that was the cure for me, but I am now holding baby Samuel in my arms as I write - a miracle, to be sure! I took 1500 mg of metformin, and I did have side effects for 2 or 3 weeks (diarrhea and cramping). The side effects were very annoying for me, but after the first couple of weeks I was fine. I also followed a diabetic type diet. In spite of this, when they took me off of the metformin at 13 weeks, I developed gestational diabetes within a few weeks. So obviously, I have issues with blood sugar.

My sister also takes metformin. She is somewhat overweight, has problems with her cycle, and has had two miscarriages. Since taking the metformin, she has finally been able to begin losing weight, which she has been trying to do for years.

I was taking Vitex, Red Clover, a MACK DADDDY of a vitamin (SuperMom from the Beeyoutiful website), Fertilaid, and a few other things. I'll have to go back to my notebook and look it up.

I was put on 2000mg of metformin in August, and they told me it might be 6-9 mos before I ovulated on my own...obviously not, since John and David were conceived in Sept and are currently growing/gaining weight in the NICU at the hospital around the corner, lol. I was taking all of the herbal things to treat PCOS before I was put on the metformin, however, so it may have been a cumulative/combined effect.

I stayed on Metformin my entire pregnancy (and am still on it)...and fortunately, did not end up with gest diabetes (I run several risk factors--overweight, dx'd w/PCOS, over age 30, multiple gestation, previous large baby...)I credit the metformin with that...I stayed on my 2000mg the entire time...

I would say that if one is put on metformin, get and stay on a high quality B vitamin supplement, in addition to whatever you are getting from whatever vitamins you are on now. Metformin WILL take B vitamins from your system, so it is important to "over do it" a tad. I got a good supplement from Target, their Origin brand, B complex (or B 100, I cannot remember which). I take 1 a day, and will do so at least as long as I am on the met (which I see be a long term deal).

I know my symptoms get worse with the more weight I put on (while not pregnant)...the hair loss didn't start showing up til I was over 180 (I am 5'4", and so you can imagine)....I was shedding like a Husky in Atlanta in July. Whew. I don't know what my weight is now...didn't get weighed when I was admitted to the hospital, and didn't get weighed when I left...so I honestly have no clue, lol. BUT I am back down to somwhere near where I was before pregnancy, as I can wear the same clothes I wore last summer...thank goodness...lol.

I will take a look at my NFP notebook and see what I wrote on my charts as far as what I was taking....

Rachel

Regarding weight loss the family memeber who has PCOS is using the Tony Ferguson Diet with great success She started on New Year's day weighing 85kg with a height of 5"2, she has now shed over 13kg and is weighing 69kg!!! and with a loss of 18cm around the waist. Various attempts have been made in the past and this is the first and really easiest success. Cycles also seem to be happening. I'm am very excited

Sorry I've not dug that stuff out yet, ladies--John came home from the hospital yesterday, my parents come into town this weekend, I've had an allergic reaction to "something" in the hospital where I delivered/the boys were at resulting in awful head congestion and a nasty cough, and DH leaves a week from tomorrow (June 1st) for his deployment--can you say I have a full plate right now? LOL

I will do my level best to get it tomorrow....I have a Dr's apptmt with the boys in the morning, but after that, I don't know what I have planned, lol. Maybe a nap, if I can convince DH...

Rachel
