Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 14 year old dd is struggling with writing ... always has for that matter. Her thoughts are very simple and it is so hard to "pull words out of her" to put down on paper. She is black and white. Descriptive language is "not her thing." She reads a lot and listens to books on tape every day almost, so exposure to good writing is not the problem. Any ideas to help??

Have you tried Bravewriter?

We are signed up for the Bravewriter emails and incorporating Julie's ideas into our day or week has made writing a more natural part of our life. Julie has specific suggestions on drawing out ideas and interests, on how to write and how to edit.

Maria,

Are you looking for help for creative writing? I really do believe that not everyone is or will be a "creative writer" ....

Or, are you looking for how to help her express thoughts on paper in general?

If you want to help her learn to organize her thoughts and express them coherently on paper, I'd recommend starting small with something like working on paragraph organization or letter writing.

Here's an old thread on Bravewriter.

Here's what came up when I plugged in the search phrase "writing skills" ... don't know which threads there might be of help, but maybe it will be a start.

I've only got a minute to be here this morning, so I'm sorry if this sounds rushed!

Maria--
I used to teach high school composition and tutor many homeschool kids now. In my experience, a teen will do much better when given time to find her own voice. If her writing style is very simple and straightforward, maybe giving her topics that would lend temselves to that style for a while will help her to develop a sense of who she is a writer and make it easier to adapt to new challenges. Also, for very simple writers, I ofte assign little challenges, like can you write a well-formed paragraph that is at least ten sentences...a challenge for drawingthings out a bit...or a paragraph that includes at least one of each type of sentence (can be used for simple, complex, etc...or demonstrative, interogative etc...) Hope some of this helps!
