Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Are there any missionaries here ? We are getting ready to have immunizations and get our passports in order . Its been 10 yrs since we traveled !
I'm wondering what has changed since then besides security .
We had always done the pick and choose our immunizations and I like to still do that if possible so I'm wondering which ones are absolutely nessesary
We will first be in central /south america probably but dh eventually really wants to end up in Africa .
So any ideas where to begin regarding immunizing would be great .My Dr.just ordered us all blood work to see what we have had already . So I'd now like to be prepared somewhat for when we go meet with him again .
Thanks for any help . Much Lov , Rox

We pick and choose, delay, refuse at various times for various vacs too.

Given the areas you will be going to, I'd get any that your blood work doesn't already show antibodies for. Esp. if there might be medical environments to deal with, or more to the point, a lack of modern medical situations to deal with.

It's not just for the sake of avoiding particuliar illnesses. It's also important to avoid the need for medical care that may not be available where you are going should even a typical illness start to turn worse.

I totally agree with Martha. We've also refused and picked and chosen among the vaccines. But, seeing as you're going to places where medical care is sometimes hard to get and the incidence of disease is high, I'd go with the vaccines.

And, believe me, I don't say that lightly.

last fall my MIL took my oldest ds to Guatemala on a mission awareness trip with CFCA. I used the CDC site to find out what he needed to get.
The only thing extra that he ended up getting was the hepatitis A vaccine (hep A is spread in food)

Rox,
Another possibility is that while on mission in those areas you may be away from medical care, but in all likelihood, you will land in a large city where you could visit a clinic there and find out what you need for the areas you are traveling to. They will know more specifically and usually the medical care is free or vey low cost. Brendan had his baby immunizations all in the Caribbean and the added anything he needed at his two year check-up when we got home. Most importantly, bring as much as you can by way of mosquito protection as some of the worst viruses which you can't prepare for are spread that way. I also always stop in at a pharmacy and pick up a dewormer and anti-amoeba medicine---dengue and amoebas caused our worst illnesses. Worm are commonly picked up by kids in third world countries and while they sound scary are usually no big deal, but we gave our kids the treament every three monts just in case. Also, my doctor gave me a large prescription for phenergen suppositories which we traveled with, refrigeration can be a problem as it is so hot, but if possible, they are worth having. I'm jealous of your plans...we're praying it works out for us to Mexico for part of the summer and maybe Asia some time soon!
