My friend Gary has been clean and sober for six years...and he had knee surgery a couple of days ago. He has asked for prayers to help him avoid the temptation of pain medication addiction, because he knows that he would step from there to the illegal substances he gave up that special day six years ago. Please, please storm heaven for him. He has a devoted wife and two lovely children...he loves them all dearly and doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize his hard-won sobriety.
This is a really important intention. I've known Gary for about ten years and I have never seen him beg for help like this. I think he's pretty scared, because he is in pain and the docs don't understand how easy it is for him to backslide. They just prescribe things.

Gary seems to be doing well. I know it's due to your prayers! He wrote me to thank me for asking you to pray. I met him through an online reading group of sorts, quite a few years ago, and this group has pulled together to become quite a little family. We've all been doing our best to encourage and distract him until he felt well enough to chuck the pain meds. (One of our group, who's a social worker and educator, very outspoken, just "yelled" at him - can you do that in virtual existence? - to throw the whole bottle of pills away...)
At any rate, it seems he's over the worst of his worries; I'll certainly update if he asks for more help.
May God bless you for praying for him! I know his wife and two beloved children appreciate your prayers as much as Gary does...it must have been really terrifying to know he needed post-surgery meds, given his past, and it's wonderful to see him coming out of this crisis with all flags flying.

PS - Someday I'll tell him about Matt Talbot. I think he could relate, even though he's not Catholic...he went to something like 600 AA meetings in a row to kick his varied habits, sometimes more than once a day.

Praying here too as our son in law also endured knee surgery this past week Wednesday for a serious sports injury. We will offer this tough week we're having up for the intentions of those on this forum. Please let us know how he does along the way in his recovery.
