I have the Eastern Field guide, but now we live in the west. It appears that many birds cover a great deal of both halves of the States. Do I need to buy the Western Field Guide? How much difference is there, really?

Tina, there are quite a few western birds that are surprisingly different! I'd p/u the Western bird guide. Hey, even when I travel I get the guide to the locals. I have a guide to both Mexican birds and European birds--both well worth the purchase, even for a week's worth of birding.

Or maybe I am a bit too obsessed.

OOooooh, I'm embarrassed. We *lived* in Europe for 4 years and I eschewed buying a field guide thinking that the living arrangements were only temporary. There was nothing out there that I could see that I couldn't identify. Most of what we saw was pigeons and magpies. But then, we didn't really go on birding hikes. We went on nature walks mostly in our neighborhood when we lived in Germany, just to be out in the wonderfully fresh air, see the landscapes ... so different than our own ... and sniff the wonderful smells.

In England, we were a bit confined as to the nature that is not owned by someone. Also, I was more than a little afraid of driving in that country. There was a pond in which we went pond dipping on base. We walked around that pond several times per year just to see the differences each season.
