One of my sons started medication today to treat ADHD symptoms. We've spent years tossing this decision back and forth and tried in August with two other medications but couldn't find a good match.
I'm sad as a mom that he has a hard time maintaining focus and attention and wondering if what I'm teaching him now at this young level is even mattering and how we will teach as he grows older.
After a trip to the Dr. yesterday we tried a new medication this morning and by 1:00 we were having ticks, and very horrible side effects.
I took the patch off at 3pm but the overdose of medication is still affecting him and its 9:15pm. We have given him two doses of a sedative that the Dr. prescribed and still he is just all over the place. Walking on tip-toes, hitting himself, talking two to three words and then having this kissing tick where he puckers his lips like a fish. He is wired beyond anything I have ever seen and I'm just sad that we are having to go through this. Frustrated that the medicine didn't work and yet knowing that I shouldn't put my faith in that alone but in Jesus Christ.
If you wouldn't mind, please lift he and I up tonight as it looks like it will be a long night. The Dr. said he may not sleep at all.
Thank you,

Thank you ladies.
I have been avoiding posting all day because using medication is somewhat of an iffy topic and with our older son we chose to not go that route at all and instead started homeschooling which has worked well for us.
With Andrew things are so different and I felt like we've needed to explore all the options that were there in order to help him as best as we could. This was the last step for us. There is no other medication that we can try at this time and truth be told I'm so glad about that. His body can not handle it and watching him go through what he did today has me a wreck.
I was nervous about posting because I didn't want to get slammed (not that I thought that I would here, but I have from others before so... it was really just knee jerk reaction). Because of the length of this though I really appreciate all the prayers on his behalf.

I'm so sorry about the side effects. Aidan had some adverse effects to one of his seizure meds once and became hostile and depressed. It's hard finding what will work for that particular child. Anyway, I will pray that you have a peaceful night.

It's SO difficult to watch our children suffer this way!
We haven't had to deal with meds but my PDD boy does have some odd tics/behaviours that really make you worry and wonder "what has he done to deserve this?"
I'm rambling, sorry. I empathize deeply and will keep you and your son in my prayers.

We are still up. I've just finished speaking to the pharmacist because the hospital wont give me any advice or confirm my suspicions for me.
Andrew seems to be coming down from the Daytrana (ADHD meds) but is acting very drunk in behavior now. Slow and slurred words. He can't walk straight, he is hallucinating and hearing things but still is very active. I had wanted to know if this was to be expected or if I should bring him in. It's not unreasonable to ask that is it? I am home in the middle of the night alone with 4 children and over 20 minutes from the hospital but all the nurse could tell me there was that she couldn't give me advice as to what to do that I should call the pharmacist.
Continued prayers are so appreciated.

Theresa, does your son have any behaviors normally that might be considered tics? The reason I ask is that *many* ADHD medications affect children with Tourette Syndrome in this way; they make tics worse and bring out tics that weren't even there in the first place. Sometimes tics have been fairly mild and kids aren't even diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome before they start on the ADHD meds.
Please pm me if there is anything you would like to talk about, and I'll be praying for you!

I just saw this, too-- I'm praying for you and your son, Theresa. Just remember, we all have to make difficult decisions about our children, and we can't think about what others might have to say about it. God gave your son to you and your husband, no one else.
God bless!!
