Okay, this is reeeeeealy nit-picky, but does anyone organize their fridge? I'm so sick of losing things, forgetting about leftovers, wasting food and money in general . . . I'm looking for some good ideas. For instance, my crisper drawer is a produce black hole. Out of sight, out of mind.

Any pearls of wisdom for me???

Anne,

Hmmm...Fridge organization seems so dependent on the fridge style!

Some things that I do that have helped me:

1. I keep masking tape and a Sharpie near my fridge to label my leftovers/containers with the date that they should be used by.

2. I wash all produce and take it out of the grocery store bags, so I can see it!

3. I go to the grocery store once a week and on "shopping" day, I do a quick clean out - so I know what's in there!

4. And for me, when I made a commitment to have a salad with every dinner, the produce doesn't seem to go bad!

(On a nitpicky note: I have a nitpicky friend who keeps placemats in her fridge to keep her fridge clean. This only works with fridges with solid shelves. I think it might mess up circulation with a fridge with racks. But her fridge is organized and pretty!)

I love this idea-- my husband and I have different views on how long before something isn't good anymore. Usually, someone pulls something out, we can't remember what it was, let alone when we ate it, and dh is SURE ist still good to eat . . . .

My dh thinks like yours! I try to clean out the fridge when he is not around.

Our evenings get a little crazy driving kiddo's to sports practices, so sometimes even with best intentions, leftovers are forgotten or food goes bad.

One word...MENU!

I use to loose alot of $ in veggies gone bad. I have made a two week menu and I only buy on my list. I have been so pleased how much money we have saved and the very little waste. Also, as mentioned before I clean out the fridige the night be fore I go shopping it is staying rather clean too!!

1. Here is an idea from Lissa's blog about organizing salad fixings and a way to eat them more.

2. I clean out my fridge every Wed., which is when I make a grocery list to get ready to go groc shop on Thur.

3. Keep certain things in certain areas. this helps dh know "about" where to look when looking for something.

4. Your meal plan and how you use it will affect your food storage. I've read that a lot of food waste from the fridge is b/c people don't actually make what they purchased groceries for, because they don't remember what they planned on making (uh...like i used to do ). Almost no food goes to waste , now that i write down what my meals are for the week.

5. Can you use your leftovers more for lunch time, if you aren't already? instead of making something new for lunch. Maybe designate a couple days a week for leftovers for lunch.

6. Lots of my friends with 3+ kids have a second fridge. we don't, but i'd like to in a couple years. A very packed fridge is hard to keep "current" cuz you can't move things around and get to them.

7. I swear by Tupperware Fridge Smarts. They really keep the produce fresh for much longer than in the crisper bin. I use them a lot! Keep the "list" of openings on the front of my fridge.

HTH,
