Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

do a little here and there?

I usually do a mega shop every two weeks as that is dh's pay schedule, but I've been noticing that it seems to take a WHOLE day (or at least feels that way) even with everyone helping, to get it all done (shopping, loading and unloading, putting everything away). It's nice to have it all out of the way (besides a few side trips dh or one of the older boys will do for me as the weeks progress and we find ourselve needing something)...but I am wondering if maybe going every week, or even every couple days might make it a more manageable task. What do you all do?

I really dislike shopping for food because it seems like no matter what method I attempt, it takes longer and is more work than I thought it would be. It always feels to me like its time that could be better spent. But then I try to remember that food shopping is certainly a good thing for a loving wife and mother to do with care....sometimes it helps...

I mega shop. I would rather take one afternoon than be forever 'stopping by' somewhere before or after events. I sometimes ask dh to stop by the store on the way home from work if I'm out of something important, but that's rare. I shop to maintain a pantry, which helps a lot.

I have found that for some reason a mega shop ends up costing less than shopping here and there. Just something to factor in. We shop at night, it is lots quicker as you are not contending with the crowds nor do I run into too many people I know the line wait doens't happen either. At times we have even gone for the once a month shop. I found it too difficult though as that just exhausted me. Now I tend to shop about once every three weeks with a trip to the veggie shop for fruit, veggies, bread and milk once a week.

I'm with Books

My dh does it alone every two weeks.      He couldn't handle doing enough for a month by himself! Then he brings it in and I put it away, while he takes a breather. I am with you it is such a big job! At one time we lived so far from a grocery store that we tried doing it once a month, it was a lot longer of a job, and then you need some creative space (or a large pantry) to put it all in!

I send dh because he is good at not doing impulse buying, he is a strict list person! And so we save $.

I'm with Books and Erin! I mega shop once a month, usually by hitting Sam's first then getting the other things I need from the grocery store.   I know I save money doing it this way. A friend and I go together if we can and stop to get coffee on the way home - it makes it a little more bearable. My kids love it. They think it is so cool when I pull up with a van full of food to be unloaded. You never saw such excitement over things like macaroni and cantaloupe! (And no, they don't starve for a few days before I go!)
I should add that especially toward the end of the month my dh has to stop frequently on his way home from work for things like bread and milk, but he doesn't mind. Also, in the summer, I hit the farmers market once a week, so I have to be sure and set some $$ aside for that.

We shop every 2 weeks -dh's pay schedule also. I like it that way. Except for the occassional milk and bread run I am done for a couple of weeks anyway.

I have done the shopping here and there and it has always cost me more. I tend to be more impulsive when I shop that way and feel disorganized. when I do it every two weeks it helps me focus and get everything on a list and planned out.
