Our neighbor's wildly out of control three month old puppy (he is three months old, but already the size of a small horse! I do not know the type of dog--nice looking, dark and curly) just broke loose again and jumped all over my children. For the most part, they don't really mind it, but he frightened my three year old terribly and scratched her on the face. I washed the scratch with soap and water and sprayed the area with bactine. Do I need to do anything more?
Also, pray for me to resolve this situation. I really do not know these neighbors, but their dog is becoming more and more of a problem. He came from out of nowhere before and knocked over my five year old son, acting as if he was attacking him--when we tried to get the children inside, he ran right into our house! The baby was crawling on the floor and completely vulnerable as he ran all over.
He came over several times while I had company the other day as well causing an enormous ruckus.
The truth is--I have never even laid eyes on the owner and need to determine which house he's from.
In the meantime, my kids are stuck in the house!
Bottom line though--how best to treat a dog scratch?

I'm assuming it doesn't look like it needs stitches? My dd was scratched by a dog last year. I had to take her to the hosp; it was deeper than a scratch. She could have used a couple of stitches, but ended up with steri-strips holding the edges together. The hospital staff hadn't told me not to feed her anything, so she couldn't have any anesthesia when she started freaking out about getting stitches.
Anyway, they didn't have me do anything special in terms of cleaning it, after they cleaned it there. Sounds like you took care of that with the bactrine. I'd just keep a good eye on it, in case of infection, and maybe give your doc a call on monday just to be on the safe side.

Dog scratches are usually easy. You have done it correctly; she'll be fine. I hope she is not overly frightened, as I think being frightened of dogs is a handicap.
As for the dog, I'd catch him and keep him until someone comes looking for him. I do things like that all the time, though . Explain the situation when you meet the owners. Even though you are more rural than we are, there is still a leash law. In the end, the owners are responsible for controlling their dog, and it is in the dog's best interest to be leashed or secured.

The advice about the sctratch is good. Shouldn't be a problem.
But the dog IS. I would stop it immediately (as another mom said, catch the dog and have a long talk with the owner.) Specifically, the dog CANNOT be allowed to be free around your children. A baby or toddler may one day reach inside the dog's mouth or poke him in the eye or ANYTHING and the dog may react negatively. The behavior you described is SIMPLY unacceptable (on YOUR property). If you go to their house, it maybe a bit different. (But even at an owner's house, the dog must respect your children or be locked away.)
The dog may be a cute puppy now, and may turn into a wonderful adult dog, but may pose a danger (now or later) to samll inquiring children!
Yours in Christ,
Kathy

Alice, you've already gotten great advice. I would add one more point, and that is to document every encounter you've had with this dog - date, time and what occurred. And I'd consider a getting a picture of your dd's injury.
I know it might sound overblown, and I'm not intentionally trying to be dramatic, but if you ever have to prove something to the owners, you'll be able to. They may just not realize what's actually happening with their dog when he's loose.
Hope this helps...

I don't think Tami's advice sounds overblown at all. I have seen this happen to someone else. Definitely document it!

Thank you for your advice and care. I am going to take it all to heart and write back again.
Right now, I could use a quick prayer though. Dh is across the street (with our scratched three year old as Exhibit A) talking to the neighbors and trying to get them to understand the importance of controlling their dog!

Thank you dear friends!
Dh is just back. The neighbor was very nice and said he is planning on sending the puppy back to the breeder, because they haven't been able to control him. He also reports that the dog has had all his shots.
(Tami, I have those pictures and thank you for the suggestions on documentation.)
I guess that will be that.
Noreen, MacBeth, Kathy, Tami and Matilda, thank you!

Alice, I'm glad all is well, but I am sad that the pup may have to go back to the breeder. Training a puppy, like anything else that's worth doing, takes some effort. Perhaps the folks were not informed, or perhaps this pup is unusually wild, but a good trainer could probably help them.
It just seems that everything that is inconvenient these days is more easily removed than remedied.

Very true, MacBeth, and I thought of this as well!
Amazing that anyone would get a dog like that without the willingness to commit to training and controlling it. It is a beautiful animal too and obviously loves children--perhaps a bit too much!

P.S. The man didn't say he was sending the dog back to the breeder in response to our complaint, but before dh had a chance to even tell him our story. I think the dog's been getting out several times a day and probably causing complaints from neighbors who are a lot more vocal about these things than we are!
