Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can someone recommend a book on Mary Queen of Scots? This is for dd, older teen, reading it both for fun and for some factual information. Thank you.

The only book that's coming to mind is Mary Queen of Scots by Antonia Fraser. MODG recommends it for their 11th grade Medieval History and Literature syllabus.I haven't read it, but have read some of Fraser's other books and have found them to be interesting and balanced.

Antonia Fraser is the daughter of Lord Longford, who was a very prominent British Catholic. I have no idea if she herself is still a practicing Catholic. Her daughter, Rebecca Fraser, has written A People's History of Britain, which has been getting good reviews from homeschooling families. I haven't seen it yet myself.

Kathryn,
I'm wondering if you've seen this book yet?

Their are two books written by Jean Plaidy (one of my new favorite historical novelists) that are EXCELLENT about the Queen of Scots.

I just finished Royal Road to Fotheringay a couple months ago. It kept me up at night, WAY TOO LONG, reading it. This is about her early life at the French court and then about the beginning of her reign in Scotland, up until her captivity.

Then, The Captive Queen of Scots is about the rest of her life in captivity. I haven't read it yet, but it's sitting on my shelf beckoning. Elena Maria Vidal recommended this book.

They are longer books, written for adults, but absolutely captivating. Jean Plaidy wrote in the 50's, so there is not a lot of "s_xu_l descriptions" etc. that would make it inappropriate for teens. Of course, any book about her will have her alleged marital indiscrection, as that's what she is known for.

I haven't ... but I'm glad you asked and reminded me about it. I have just reserved it at the library.

I saw her shoe last weekend in an Australian museum...such a small, wide foot.

Popping in here again to tell you a bit of feedback from Elena Maria Vidal about books about Mary Queen of Scots.

She highly recommends Antonia Fraser's "Mary Queen of Scots" and also Alison Weir's "Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley. Neither author believe Mary had an affair with Bothwell. Weir also proves that she was completely innocent of Darnley's murder.

Because it was mentioned above, here is Elena's review of Antonia Fraser's bio of Marie-Antoinette.

Antonia Fraser's parents were converts to Catholicism and so Antonia was raised Catholic, more or less. In her forties she had an affair with socialist writer Harold Pinter and left her husband and six children to live with him. Eventually, they got married. See here for Wikipedia info.

She is still Catholic but very progressive, as can be seen here.

[Lady Antonia] "now attends a sung Latin mass most Sundays but is a moderniser. 'I believe very strongly that the time for women priests has come. They have been a great success in the Anglican church and the church has changed its stance on things like usury and slavery so I hope it will change its stance on this. And maybe one of my 11 granddaughters will be a priest.'

Here I am, two years later, just having searched Jean Plaidy ~ found some enticing novels while browsing the library yesterday (Captive Queen of Scots and Murder Most Royal) ~ and gleaning all this great information on a few Tudor authors. I love this forum!

I'm waiting for my copy of Mary, Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley from the library!

Linking Tea At Trianon's search results for "Mary Queen Scots"

Here it is, from last January:
How Mary Queen of Scots wrote of fears for strife-torn nation

There is also a movie coming out? came out? (I can't find it....) with Scarlett Johansson.......

Kathryn,

I just ordered Mary, Queen of Scots by Elizabeth O'Neill to review. Do you know if this is the same Elizabeth O'Neill that wrote The World's Story?

Another question for Kathryn!

Is Fraser's A People's History of England the same book as this book:
The Story of BritainThe Story of Britain but just the Americanized title?

I am trying to find a good living text to augment our studies of the British isles for my 14 year old this year. Any other suggestions welcome!

Many thanks!
