Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband will probably be building the fire for Easter vigil this year outside of church. At what point should he extinguish it? I couldn't find the answer anywhere. We won't be attending the Vigil this year, but I have plans to do Alice's project next spring (last week I printed it all out so I'll be set, and I'll put with our Christmas things so I'll remember by Lent) and attend next Easter so it will be nice to say, "Remember when Daddy lit the fire last year?"

Also, Maria von Trapp says the fire is traditionally started with flint. Is this a must or not?

I'm thinking the Easter fire is extinguished when the Pascal Candle is lit from it. The Pascal Candle is then carried in procession, with the chant of "Lumen Christi". As the Candle now bears the light of Christ, the fire has served its purpose of igniting the light of Christ. This is just what seems right to me and is what I *think* I remember.

Peace,
Nancy

In going through some of the instructions, I do not see anything in the new documents about *how* the new fire should be started. From flint would be wonderful, as I read this symbolism:
Originally this fire was struck from flint because it was the only way known to antiquity. Like so many other customs this has acquired symbolic meaning with the passing of time. Fire is struck from a stone: light comes from Christ the Cornerstone. The circumstance that a new fire had to built with sparks struck from a flint explains why this was done out of doors or in the church porch. Obtaining a light from flint and getting a charcoal fire to burn would be rather troublesome and attended by much smoke. Naturally this would be better done outside the church. (The Meaning of Holy Week by Rev. William O'Shea, 1965)

As far as extinguishing, it's after the Paschal Candle is lit, but after everyone goes inside, as the new fire is subordinate to the blessing of the paschal candle and procession. Here are the instructions I found:
160. The "new fire" of Easter at the gathering place should be a large bonfire, "whose flames should be such that they genuinely dispel the darkness and light up the night." Depending on local circumstances, and taking safety into account, ushers, or other laity prepare, maintain and supervise the fire. After the procession with the Easter candle has entered the church, and the faithful have lit their candles, those in charge of the new fire should remain at the gathering place and carefully extinguish the fire before entering the church themselves. (Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year According to the Modern Roman Rite, by Msgr. Peter J. Elliott, Ignatius Press)

Paschales Solemnitatis (The Preparation and Celebration of the Easter Feasts)

If you could witness how the Dominican House of Studies start their new fire -- what pyromaniacs those brothers are!
