Dear Friends,
Lissa just called on her way to the Emergency Room with Steven. He has an incarcerated bowel and needs emergency hernia repair surgery. The problem is not at the critical stage yet, but it needs to be fixed before it becomes critical. This is coming on the heels of his mystery swelling from last week that turned out to be a fractured skull!
Lissa, by the way, gets my nomination for mother of the year. Even through all this, she sounded calm over the phone. Worried, yes, but definitely a rock as always. Pray especially for her eldest daughter. Tomorrow is her birthday, and Steven's skull fracture forced the family to postpone her birthday trip to see my girls (something she'd been counting on for six months). As if that isn't enough, now it looks like Lissa might not even be home to celebrate with her. This is extremely hard for both of them.

I just can't imagine what they're going through.
May Our Lady hold them all in her Immaculate Heart!

Praying here, too...I know how hard it is to be that calm when faced with an emergency for a child.

I am very glad to say that Steven did not need surgery after all. The doctors were able to move the bowel non-surgically, so, although they will need to watch him carefully, it is possible that no further treatment will be needed.
She will also be home for her little girl's tenth birthday tomorrow! Hooray!
Lissa will update in more detail when she has a moment--the day has been a roller coaster ride, but they ended on a high.
Once again, your prayers have really made a difference. Thank you all so much.

Alice the Best, thanks for keeping the gang updated.
Boy oh boy, Stevie is going for a record. As Alice wrote, the surgeon was able to manually reduce the hernia (push the bowel back into place). We were discharged with instructions to watch it closely. I'm pretty sure it's back out again now--at least, the sac is; I can't tell if the bowel is back out too. Unless there's a sudden change, he'll see the dr again tomorrow.
He had hernia repair surgery 15 months ago, when he was 3 months old. Apparently only something like 1% of inguinal hernias recur after surgery--and for the recurrence to happen more than a year later is, the surgeon tells me, incredibly rare. Which sounds about right for our Wonderboy.
In case a skull fracture & hernia recurrence wasn't exciting enough for one week, he gave us another surprise yesterday--the ER docs ordered chest x-rays as a precaution since he had a high fever. (Still does, actually.) What do you know: he has pneumonia too. So it's a blessing he didn't need that surgery yesterday. And also a blessing (it turns out) that the skull fracture canceled our long-awaited plans to visit Alice's family. We would have been on the road yesterday when the hernia reappeared in a baby with undetected pneumonia!
Thanks for your continued prayers, especially for speedy recovery from the pneumonia and no complications with the hernia or skull fracture. I'd also appreciate prayers for answers--we are wondering if there may be something about his health or condition that ties all of his various issues together, and we want to be sure we're not missing anything.
Thanks so much!

Oh, Lissa, we're praying for your sweetie, and for answers. What a week you've all had.
Hugs to Kate from us, and a happy birthday amidst the trials!

Hello dear friends,
Lissa called from the hospital where she is waiting for another test for Stevie. The swelling has gone down on the linear fracture, but now there are some unexplained bumps on the top of his head. This is all so troubling, so please pray for baby Steven, Lissa, and all her family. The test (an X-ray) is going on now (2:13 pm, EST, Thursday), so, please, if you are reading this, pray that Lissa gets some good news immediately.
