Does anybody have some ideas for beginning readers for my six-year old? He is almost half-way through Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I want to put it aside over the summer because the stories get so long after lesson 50. He finds the stories in it quite humorous, so I thought that moving to some actual books would be a welcome break.
Honestly, I cannot remember what I did with my daughter at this stage. I think that she finished Easy Lessons at the end of her Kindergarten year and went on to reading everything in sight! My son is reading fairly well with help, but it isn't as natural for him.

Do you have a printer? My son really enjoyed it when I printed out stories from this primer by Harriet Taylor Treadwell available on the Baldwin website:

These stories are classic, prettily illustrated, and wonderfully rhythmic. We have a ton of those little red folders into which my son would put each story I printed for him from the internet. Thus he got the fun of making a "book". He also would glue on the title page (or make his own) and we would include any typed out narrations or illustrations that he created for the stories. This might be a good fit for you and your son!

P.S. Now that my son has finished the Primer we have moved onto the first reader by the same author. And there are other online primers!

I recently have run into the same situation with my boy. And he turned up his nose at anything that looked girlish or cute at all! 
That includes the Seton Readers, CHC little folks, Little Angel readers, etc. Can't say I blame him much!
If you find that you have this problem, Christian liberty has Nature Readers which are very nice. (The first 3 are actually the same nature readers which Emmanuel books is offering from Lepanto Press.) I also discovered the Usborne Young Reading series. They have things like The Story of Chocolate, The story of ships and The story of Toilets, Telephones and other useful inventions!
You may be able to get these or others from your library.

The Step Into Reading Books were a hit with my boys. Any Barnes and Noble has them and they can pick the ones they are interested in, many history and science topics to choose from too, not just fluff reading. Steps 1 through 4 as suits their reading ability. I have always made them use the readers I have to some degree. (We didn't think they were girly at all.) As a reward, I'd take them up to B&N to choose a book of their own.

My boys have loved Frog and Toad books and anything else by Arnold Lobel. The Billy and Blaze books are masculine and well-illustrated, too.

 Thank you so much for this resource. I did not know about them and they are perfect. Now for some colored ink.
I appreciate all of your suggestions. I took them to the library with me last week, and we checked some books out.
