Has anyone been to visit Ave Maria, Florida?
I have a friend who is moving there and she talks like it is going to be a Catholic etopia.
Looking on line everything looks so beautiful.
The University is also beautiful and growing. I know of two girls attending next year.
Has anyone actually seen this town and what do you think?

I have not, but it's funny you brought this up as I just recently asked Elizabeth if she knew anything about it.
One of my husband's good friends told me about it while we were visiting in FLA, and that she is planning on retiring there. It does sound like a wonderful place!

Kelly has written about it here. She hasn't been online much lately, but I would try sending a PM for more info.

Kelly was talking about Mission San Miguel Community which is near Tallahassee; Ave Maria is near Naples. I've been to the Ave Maria site when we were checking into Ave Maria University. Naples is a pretty town, but it does have a high cost of living. There are many wealthy retirees and there is no shortage of drugstores The town and eventual campus are about 20 miles from Naples and the area is not quite the same as Naples itself. There is some controversy with both the town and university, so if you're really interested you should do some through research to see if it meets your needs and expectations.

My son's godmother attends the university - I personally will never go there (the town or the school), even for Sarah's graduation sadly (the administration would cringe if I showed up with my son, anyway, and it should be a joyous day for Sarah).

Sorry if this is too personal, but why would the administration have a problem with your son?

I have driven by it and have only seen it from the highway. We live just outside of Fort Myers Florida -45 minutes from naples - and so we are not out that way too much.
It is really very beautiful but there is controversy still between the town(naples) and the University.
As with anything do your homework and if it is a fit for you go for it.

There seems to be a lot of controversial stuff going on there. Do a google and see. Just yesterday, Fr. Fessio was fired. There is a lot of other stuff too concerning accreditation, lots of firing of professors, etc.

I am sorry - I should have not have posted my message yet, as I meant to change it and add to it anyway.... My intent was to say that my son's godmother would love to tell anyone anything they want to know about the town or the university - she's the in-house epxert.
Just for clarity's sake: particular members of the administration at AMU are not welcoming of certain types of persons, such as those with a stronger sense of what it means to be pro-life than they have. They are good people, working hard to build a school with a wonderful image. It is entirely possible (and I hope and pray every day) that the current administration is differently balanced now and will be able to move forward with clarity and charity.
God Bless!

Technically, Fr. Fessio was asked to resign as provost then a day later was reinstated in a different capacity. You gotta love management jargon .
Love,
