Ok, i am kind of embarrassed to ask this since i was a first and second grade teacher and i should really know this. but, how do you all "teach" sight words, meaning the many words that kids should learn by sight, not sounding out. (like the, and, of, etc) my son has the letter sounds down pat, and we have started on some blends, but i am wondering if i should work on sight words as he is trying to "read" all the time and getting hung up on all those pesky words that always crop up and dont fit the sounds he has learned. wondering how some of you BTDT moms have taught sight words

Don't know if this will help but Jan Brett has some lovely Dolch Word printable charts (PDF format) that you could print out (I would enlarge them too) and place eye level on the wall for your little one.

I am finishing up teaching my second DS to read now and for teaching sight words I googled for a list of sight words, then I made my own flash cards off of that list with plain index cards.
At first I would just go through the deck with the budding reader and tell them what the word said, did that for a week or two and then began having them read me the words...until mastery. Also the list was SO LONG that I ended up making it into two decks of cards one for 1-3 letter words and another for 4-6 letter words.
This has worked very well and my 7yr old is now just polishing his reading skills up and will be an "independant" reader by the end of this yr. (May) I hope this helps.

Dani, that link didn't work so here's the linkJan Brett Dolch word list. Thanks so much for reminding me about these -- they are so pretty and I'll slip them into page protectors and we'll have some fun with them. I had forgotten what a treasure trove Jan's pages are!

I tried to find a link to a site I used last year (the site has been taken down )
I'll try to explain... the teacher's concept was called "Popcorn Words" - because sight words "pop-up" all over the place.
Basically we used a list of sight words and wrote them on pieces of paper cut out to look like popcorn. These were stored in a plastic jar.
Each time we reviewed our words, my son took all the popcorn out of the jar and and said each word as he put the popcorn back in the jar - as he mastered the words in the jar I would add new ones (and eventually started to remove the ones he really knew).
The popcorn theme is fun and lots of ideas could come from it for motivation - popcorn treats, popcorn balls... yum!
Sorry to no longer have the link to show, hopefully my explanation is helpful.

I bought flashcards from Walgreens that were sight words-I have seen them at Walmart too. And then once they could sound out basic three letter and 4 letter words, I started her with the Seton Faith And Freedom Readers, as supplemental because that is a sight word book. But I never put the phonics aside for it, it was just a 5 minutes extra a day of sight words.

When dd (17) was little she had the same problem of wanting to sound out every word. Really slowed her down. I know the term now is popcorn words, but we called them "outlaw words" because they didn't follow rules!LOL! I made a box that looked like a little jail and when we ran across those words we would write it on a card and put it in jail. Then each morning we did "roll call." She would read all the cards one at a time. Once she could read a word on sight we would "set it free."

Two things that have helped mine with sight words are using nursery rhymes and very basic copybook(often copying over my letters rather than under to begin with). The nursery rhymes we did originally to teach rhymes!! but the incidental learning of sv is almost as great with master 5. Also when he knows a word really well he loves the "ceremony" of scrunching it up tiny and tossing it in the bin!! That makes 3 doesn't it;and I've also remembered to begin with we played games like snap, bingo and a racing car game with sight vocab

I love this idea! Thanks for sharing it! If the Lord chooses to bless us with more, I would like to use it!

thanks for your help and suggestions. i just ran across a site online that lets you print off booklets that are centered on specific sight words. they also have ones for word families. kind of cheezy, probably in the twaddle genre, but could be helpful to someone. they are found
here
thanks again for your help
