Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd13 is just wrapping up her study on the French Revolutionand I am looking forwards to planning/ordering for the next area of study.

Dd has chosen to study Switerland. Whether we focus on history or geography depends on what resources we can find. Obviously I thought of asking here first

What came to my mind first were literature books we have read in the past like Heidi. But I would like dd to have more depth in her studies now being older. I did think about the Swiss guard, though I have no materials on them. We also have a friend who is Swiss so we'll visit her.

I'd love ideas and book suggestions Thanks.

The Apple and the Arrow
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Arrow-Conrad-Buff/dp/0618128093

The ages at Amazon say 9-12, but I enjoyed reading recently myself. If she hasn't already read it, it might be worked in to your studies in some way. Maybe as a springboard for the history behind the legend.....

Thanks so much, that looks really interesting.

You may roll your eyes but I just discovered a feature on Amazon whilst there,I can tell it to browse by subject unfortunately there didn't seem to be an option to sort into children's books

Ewtn has a good movie on the Swiss Guard.

What about the St. Bernard pass? Doesn't that have to do with the St. Bernard dogs? I think there is a saint in there as well. (I'll check one of my children's saint books today. I can remember the drawing but not the name of the saint.)

St. Francis de Sales lived in Annecy France - but wasn't he bishop of Geneva? (He's a doctor of the church) (Introduction to the Devout Life is written by St. Francis de Sales. It is available on line.)

I think I may not be sticking to your topic.

Well I have thought of lots of topics to do with Switzerland.
-Swiss Guards
-Swiss Watches
-Red Cross
-Swiss Cheese
-William Tell
-St Bernard Dogs

but alas I have not found any books.

I have just spoken to my IRL friend today about Switzerland. Asking her if she could recommend any books from her childhood etc.

Anyhow she told me something that I thought would interest all 4Realers here The school system here is very different to Switzerland, I know that she does not introduce her boys to formal learning till after seven until then (and after) they do lots of crafts.

Anyhow when she was in school for every subject that they studied they made books of great detail and lots of artistic design. They were then bound into books. Sounds like fantastic notebooking to me

Have you seen the movie Third Man on the Mountain? I just found it and added it to my NetFlix Queue. I've never seen it but I hear the scenery alone is worth watching the movie for!

Has anyone read The Pope's Army: Five Hundred Years of the Swiss Guard?   If so would it interest a 13yr old?
