Lissa and all-

I have hesitated to comment on IEW because I have heard RAVES from some friends about it. However when it was taught in a coop class the kids just snoozed... my boys (who love to write) were turned off of writing and it took a while for us to recover.   

Just one little opinion from this part of the world...

I feel like you are listening.... as your blog has answered many of my questions on teen writing. I highly recommend it to you all. I am awaiting your future writing for teens.

And, Janette- I too, highly recommend it for you, too. I wish I was better at writing and as I go through these with my boys, I see ways to apply them to my own writing. I hope to put some real time into my writing and make it a priority. Now is not that time. :)

I think what I like best about this approach is it does not try to cram any of us into a box. My boys just wilt when some curruculum tells them to 'describe a pencil'. They love to freewrite and what BW does is help them take what they write, who they are, and make it better. It is almost like the reverse of most curriculums that have you fit them... instead of them fit you.

I find that I need to have backup things around to help me... grammar rules, when is a ; used and a : used... punctuation rules, etc. But that comes long after getting the ideas on paper. Ideas are what matter.

I am looking forward to help in my boys 14 and 11 writing to audiances other than each other. Right now that is all they care about. And, I want them to be able to write arguements constuctively. In the meantime I am using the good ol' Cm method of lots of narration (conversation) and arguement.. and have them hear how arguements are constructed and torn down. This is mainly through current event talk and dinner table conversation.

Then, when the writing time comes hopefully they will have had the practice orally and mentally for years and it will all come out on paper. And, Julie's book will be ready by then!

Hi Cindy!

You all can pray for me. I am finishing the high school book hopefully this weekend (by next weekend at the latest). I will be putting finishing touches on the body of it tomorrow a.m. and expanding two sections.

Then Jon will be laying it out and then we have to figure out how to sell it (it will be a digital download).

All this to say—the high school book really is close to being finished. I'm only three years overdue.

And as far as your boys writing only for each other... I think I'm starting to grasp what you mean by that. Let me cogitate some and I'll let you know what may help to expand their sense of audience.
