Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Cay!! Relax!    Follow Elizabeths advice!   And for what it's worth, I too have short hair!

Another benefit of skirt wearing I noticed last night. After running kids to a Christmas party and doing some shopping while I waited, dh called me and suggested we meet him for a celebratory dinner for the new job. (we are borrwing my in-laws car, I could get used to this 2 car business!) So, we took 8 children to a sit down steak house, and I was dressed for the occasion without even trying!    (the kids were great btw, and we got LOTS of stares of course!)

Cay,

I've been wearing skirts for the better part of 2 or 3 weeks now. There are a couple of things I've noticed:

I bought the lands-end knit skirt that Elizabeth recommended, and it is more comfortable than jeans.

I actually ordered two of them, one in black, and one on sale in blue. But the blue is lighter than it looked online -- it's like a sky-blue, not a slate -- and I feel dumb when I wear it. Not because it's a skirt, but because of the color. So if I put that skirt on, I want to run back to my jeans. I don't feel that way when I put on my black skirt (which I am wearing right now). In fact when I went back to my jeans for a couple of days (black skirt needed to be washed), I noticed how confining they felt, and how much slimmer the A-line skirt made me look.

I don't think my kids actually noticed that I put on a skirt. They just treat me like Mom.

If you show up with a bunch of kids and you're wearing a skirt, no one will treat you like a nun.

My husband made a few comments the first day, but not many. He does give me a lot of compliments.

Shoes and socks become more important with a skirt than with jeans, IMO. I hate tights, so I went the knee sock route. But most of the knee socks I've found have been thick. That's nice when I go outside (I've been no colder in a skirt, wearing leggings, than I would be in jeans), but in the house it gets too hot. If you're wearing the wrong tights or wrong socks, it can make you think the skirt thing isn't going to work, too, but it's not the skirt, it's the accessories. Same for shoes. I didn't manage to get any good shoes before the holidays, and have been wearing my tennis shoes inside the house. That also makes me feel dumb at this point.

What I've learned from this whole experiment is that I have to set myself up for success. If I buy a skirt in a color I'm not sure about, or made from a material that's not comfortable, or in a style that's not flattering to my shape, I'm going to say, "Oh, skirts just don't work for me." If I don't have comfortable socks and comfortable shoes that also go nicely with the skirt(s), I'm going to be tempted to say, "Oh, skirts just don't work for me." I'm trying to give myself a little time to experiment, to work things out so they work for *me*, and to get back on the wagon after I've been backsliding.

So far I've been able to do everything I've had to do in a skirt, and I don't even notice that I'm wearing one as the day gets going. (My kids keep me too busy.) The only problem I've had is sometimes catching my shoe in the hem of the skirt as I'm coming up stairs carrying something, or if I have to step over large toys (or children lying on the floor).

I'm new to the skirt wearing, and so far only have a handfull of decent skirts I'm comfortable wearing. I haven't seen it mentioned, so forgive me if it has been before, but the store Christopher & Banks has a great 50% off sale going on right now, and they have LOTS of lovely, modest skirts and tops. In fact, my DH and I got a small outing this morning alone while my mom watched my girls and we stopped in there. I picked up a beautiful skirt for $2.99 (marked down from $35!)!!! They had many many more at $12.99-14.99, which were originally $30 or more. Just wanted to let anyone know who has one locally!

I recently found a denim calf length maternity skirt and two maternity dresses-I'm loving it! I definately feel more feminine and "put together" -I find it very empowering (then again, maybe its just the raging hormones ). Its sad to see how form fitting some maternity fashions are these days! I can see a big difference in maternity styles between my first pregnancy(1999) and now.

Yay! Missy!

I was going to share one thing I noticed about nursing dresses. A few weeks ago a close friend that seems past her childbearing years passed a simple black Motherhood nursing dress on to me. It's so very comfy and modest,(a very slight V-neck) I searched Motherhoods online store and ebay, and nowhere could I find this style of dress! All the nursing dresses from Motherhood that I came across had plunging necklines .

Also, Motherwear dresses seem to be getting shorter and shorter too. Milk and Wild Honey is out of business, and they made great modest nursing dresses. (Thank you my 'secret santa' )

I also noticed the word 's*xy' used alot in the nursing top descriptions.

Oh I know! I was in Motherhood the other day looking for a top to wear to my f-i-l's funeral and though they had a lot of black tops to choose from in my size they all had plunging necklines!

In the end I wore a navy nursing dress that a friend lent me but if I had had time I would have made something myself. Even the stuff from places like Expressiva doesn't impress me. A friend lent me several things from there and the quality is pretty poor in my opinion - especially considering the prices.

I am not at all impressed with the nursing clothing options out there and I am seriously considering designing some modest yet stylish (because really who wants to look frumpy?) nursing dresses and tops to sell online.

Do it!

When I went looking for maternity clothes (I realize not nursing) I was so frustrated because I went to five different stores and found nothing I was going to wear. It was maternity clothes for wayward teens at best. I am so sick of seeing pregnant womens bellies. I think women are beautiful and during pregnancy there is a special essence about a woman, but I don't want to see her belly. It looks unprotected and shouldn't some wonderful experiences be between a wife and husband.

Sorry rant time .

I'll conclude with yeah Michelle. Follow your joy and talent. And pray on it to know God's will.

Cay,
I have the same with my family. I feel that as a mother of a daughter that is almost 16, I have to approach this topic carefully. I want to show her by example that I can dress modestly and still be 'stylish'. I want to encourage her to dress modestly, not turn her the other direction. She actually has been very helpful to me in how to find what 'works' for me. I have tried several things. What I have found to 'feel' the best for me as far as modesty, still not being pants, and looking attractive (I really don't like to use the word attractive because in the dictionary it says to attract, and that is not what we are seeking to do!--but here it makes my point.)is to wear gouchos or coulottes. (not sure I spelled those right) The ones that I have found are not the tight fitting kind like pants, but are more 'flowing' like skirts. They are harder to find of course than skirts, but I have found a couple. Actually all of my older children and my husband (the real opinion here! , have complimented me on how nice I look. Hope this helps!
Love,
Margaret

Michele go for it, I love to wear skirts and dresses, but that in no way means I like to look like I am 300 plus pounds,(which jumpers do for some of us), nor am I Amish,(LOVE the Amish BTW), I want to look attractive to my dh, and I want my girls to not think of me as odd looking. I have been sewing and designing for us for a while, as I like knit skirts that are very long, they are more flattering on my 6' frame, and tops that don't stop at the waist. I would love to see some great Catholic mom like you design some fun fashionable clothes.

And BTW Cay you are hilarious!     You do get use to wearing skirts, they seem so normal to me that pants seem weird and I am so aware of wearing them out in public. This is helped by my dh who very much perfers skirts!

Cay, I had a thought before my nap about your "dilemma" about looking like a nun. You're going to think I'm silly, but one word will set you apart from the nuns -- ACCESSORIZE!

I'm not talking spending lots of money, but nice jewelry, even just a pin, scarves, etc. will make the difference.

In case this thread got any of you thinking of sewing....
I made avery simple winter skirt over the weekend. This is a VERY beginning garment....you experienced seamstresses out there....don't laugh!

all you would need....
approx 2 1/4 yds fabric (winter fabrics are all on sale now!)
matching thread
sewing machine
iron
ironing board
elastic

If anyone's interested, I would do a "sew-along" for any beginning seamstresses (on the blog) if I do another one. PM or email me.

Angela - on your too light blue skirt.. if it's mostly cotton.. get some RIT dye and dye it a darker/greyer shade.. I was thinking navy since you like the black one. Color can be changed

Or check over your summer things if it's a fabric weight you'd wear in summer.. perhaps you'd find more to look nice and be comfortable with it that way.

Sorry to jump in unannounced like this! I've ended up here because this very thread is the #3 Google search result for Milk Wild Honey Nursing Dress.

I've been trying to find some nursing outfits for my wife, who favors modest, flowing-type dresses. As Lisbet mentioned above, Milk 'n' Wild Honey made dresses that fit that category and were very comfortable as well (and had pockets!)... but they're out of business now. This is the only site I can find still selling them, and they only have small and extra-small.

Can anyone recommend an alternative source for dresses like those? Ankle-length would be preferable, and she always prefers skirts/dresses that have pockets. The cotton/lycra combo on the Milk 'n' Wild Honey dresses is apparently very nice too - somewhat stretchy, but soft too.

(and actually, a source for non-nursing, non-maternity skirts and dresses in that style would be helpful too - those days will come one day!)

Thanks!

Welcome Krellan! If you find your wife dresses like Milk and Wild Honey, please let us know! I own 2 and I LOVE them, the pockets, the nursing openings, the fit, just lovely.

If you can order from Wallypop, I highly recommend her, she's great to work with and a lovely Christian mother!

I do sew & I didn't laugh! Very nice skirt! I'm impressed with any mother of small children who can actually sew something that is wearable...
