I'm continuing my container gardening. Its a bit of a late start, I had frost 8 days ago..lol. Couple tomato plants were really sad, quite yellow, but they are coming around now.
I don't have room to start plants in our house, as I have a home daycare at the moment. But dad started tomatoes for me. I have 17 plants! as well as a few carrots and garlic. I have 4 celery and just seeded lettuce, peas and turnips. I'm going to sneak a few purple carrots in with the tomatoes that don't have anything else at the moment. Oh, and I have 2 hanging pots of strawberries that wintered well, burried in the soil and covered with leaves :)
I'm hoping to pick up a cherry tree soon, and maybe some honey berry and a plum, we'll see what the budget looks like.

My potager is not faring too well. I did start many plants from seed, direct sow, and some seedlings from indoors. We've had torrential rains the last few weeks, which caused some drowning.
And now something is snacking on some of my seedlings and marigolds. I think one plant's damage is a cutworm, and so I have put a collar around the beans.
What kind of creature just cuts off marigold flowers at the stem and then doesn't even eat the blossoms?
One pea plant has a few nibbles. But the lettuce isn't being eaten (and we do have rabbits), so I am a little baffled.
I usually put a little fence around our garden, and I guess it's time to put it up. |

This past weekend we put up a little fence around each of the boxes. Turns out rabbits LOVE marigolds. I need to get a few more tomatoes to replace a few and replenish my marigolds. Decimated! One string bean plant is gone, so I'll replace it with something.
I did a lot of strewing seeds in my garden. I decided that I want some flowers throughout the summer, so intermingled with the veggies are patches of mixed flowers. We'll see. I really like "pretty" in my garden. I also did this up front, where we really haven't done much.
Some of the seeds I used are just trial and error...they were older, and if they come up, great, and if not, that's fine, too.
But it seems while my allergies weren't raging for the tree pollen this year (the meds kept it under control pretty well), I am struggling so much this week from the grass pollen. I'm completely wiped out. The amount of meds I'm taking to be functional...ugh.
For my son's FHC last year, a friend gave two little grapevines, which we planted in containers on our patio. They are chardonnay grapes, and mainly we wanted them as an experiment, to see visually and bring home the passage "I am the Vine, you are the branches...bear much fruit." And the vines do have grapes. Makes us want to plant more that I can actually make into jelly.

That sounds so great! I can't believe you just had frost! So with such a small window, container gardening makes sense. That's so nice your dad started the seeds. It does take up a lot of space in the home.

Here is my dad's garden this year..lol.. it's grown from the garden I shared last year.
He added a green house:
He uses a portable garage as a second green house:
He has a second portable garage frame that he was given, with no cover, he uses it for hanging his garden:
You can see here, a frame from a bench swing, he will have things hanging here. This was 2 weeks ago while I was visiting and we'd had frost so things are still in the green house
His climbing garden along the fence:
Love his garden. No weeding needed, or minimal, he does have a regular bed too. He waters with rain water daily. He does a light fertilizer weekly. i should have taken pictures of his catchment systems..lol

My mom canned over 200 quarts of tomatoes last year. 50 quarts tomato juice, 50 quarts of spaghetti sauce. They also collected apples from neighbors and canned 100 quarts of apple juice.
My mom has always been a canner, so she has lots and lots of jars. I might have to start this year if all my blossoms become fruit! One plant has over 50 and there are 17...eek.

That is so wonderful that your mother does that. I haven't done any canning because my mother never did, and I'm a little nervous doing it on my own. I think the best teacher are your parents!

Wow, that is impressive! I was actually inspired by all your containers, so when I ran out of space in the beds for summer squash, I filled some five gallon buckets and used those instead!
My mother canned when I was little, but she stopped by the time I was old enough to help. We did freeze some tomatoes last year to use instead of canned tomatoes.

So, I got a catalog from Territorial Seed last week that had a Fall planting schedule on the cover! I can't believe it is already time to start planning for that, but some of the things need to be started next month. It will be our first real attempt at Fall/Winter gardening, and I think we'll try to have some cold frames ready to go before the cold weather hits.
I also have some flowering kale seed I want to try for fall ornamentals. It is so neat, and who knows, if we have another freakishly warm winter, it could be around until Spring.
What are some of your favorite Fall crops?

I'm glad there is a fall planting season! My camomile and parsley were completely eaten up by deer (?) when I was out in Seattle, and the herbs were all I could plant down here in VA what with arriving late in the year and having to return to DE in August.
However, my dh has been faithfully weeding and watering my teeny-tiny plot in DE, so when I head back I'm looking forward to planting some spinach and lettuce greens. I already have cherry tomatoes, herbs, and raspberries there, so the greens will be a nice addition for fall.
I wonder if kale has the same cabbage moth trouble that can afflict broccoli?
Jenn, I saw your dill post...and I was so impressed, thinking you had dill GREENS in all this heat!!! lol!!
I felt better about my gardening abilities when I read that it was dill seeds!
My fennel is ginormous and starting to go to seed; my basil is finally taking off after the heat wave. All this water makes it happy .
How I wish we were more settled!

I do have green dill weed, too, though. I was just picking the seed a bit early to give the boys something to do.

This blog post about kitchen gardening books popped up in my feedly this morning, and I immediately thought of this thread. Also, could it be that I don't *own* any of these books already???
