Hi, Ladies,
As I was surfing around this morning, Jennifer at As Cozy as Spring had a great little post on why she picked that title for her blog. I often wonder how the different titles/names were selected, some are obvious and others allude to a song or poetry, some are just a mystery. I was thinking that it might be nice to have an informal carnival with links to posts by Real Learning ladies explaining their titles. For lack of a better name (Help me here :-) "Tell Me Why Tuesday." Would anyone be interested in participating?

Well, I already kind of did, but I would love to know why everyone else picked their names!

I just thought that if I used Latin, I would sound more intelligent. Kind of like wearing glasses to look smarter.

I chose the name of our boat for the name of our blog, The S/V Mari Hal-O-Jen. I wrote about our naming ceremony here, What is in a name...

Honestly, I think everyone has such clever names. I came up with the name around the time all the farmers were cutting hay and corn and starting to get ready for winter.

Well we just switched (again), and here's why. I'd love to read everyone's reasons! I loved reading about Ruth's and even downloaded the song to listen -- good one!

We could either post here or you could e-mail me a link and I could do an INFORMAL 'carnival/fair'after Easter (before is too crazy) What do you think?
It may be just a silly idea, but Jen's post made me wonder about all the stories behind the stories. Everyday when I see the "Attention Bloggers" topic noting a new blog or I see someone's signature line, I'm curious in a friendly sort of way. None of us pick a title to be boring, but to express something about us, our lives, our families or our history and to invite people to come and visit. I am interested in people's stories :-) and I can't be the only one. (I hope!)

Talking about it here works :-) and putting a link to a post is great. Maybe we should have called the topic "Tell me Why Wednesday" :-)

Fun Marjorie --
My why is on my "about" page: here
But for those of you who gave up blogs for Lent:
In a nutshell - my maiden name (spelled like my blog) means "a clearing in the woods"(Irish) and my married name means "from the woods" (Dutch).
So...in real words it would be: "A Lea in the Woods" - but I spell it like our last names are spelled "A Lee in the Woudes."

Even with my gift for gab, I doubt that I could get an entire post out of the reason behind my title.

What a fun thread. While I don't think my name is boring - the idea of the "domestic church" is very exciting and filled with spiritual life - I do think my blog name is not very original. I know there are several variations on the same theme already out there in the blogs. In fact, there is more of a story as to why it doesn't have a different name, which is the name I really wanted to give it, but didn't - it's a variation on domestic church but in another language.
I'm half Basque. In many languages surnames come from being the son or daughter of someone or the occupation of the family, etc. Basque last names very often tell about location, the location of the family house. Also the Basque people have a very unique language that is very different from any other language in the world so is not easily recognizable.
Etxe (or extea) is the Basque word for house. The house was given a name which was then often adopted by the family as their own. I wanted to give my blog a name that "named my house." If I had a house in the Basque country what would it be? I was throwing around names ideas like School House, Learning House, Holy House, Spirit House, etc. but settled on the idea of Church House (which I felt would be closest to Domestic Church - what I hope our house to be). It would be Exte Eliza. Then I planned on subtitling it in English right next to the Basque name but the template I had chosen would let me do that in a way I wanted without obscuring the banner I'd chosen. The banner was more important to me that the title and it was the only template where the picture worked. If I had had more time to work on it, I would have tried to make it work as I originally had wanted, but I was under a deadline to be able to "publish" so I could be in Jenn's Advent Loveliness Fair. So it went as it was just in English. Then you figure people get familiar with the blog name so you probably shouldn't change it. Don't know if I'll ever fiddle with it or not.
Maryan, it was fun to read your explanation. I had gotten the Woudes connection but did wonder about the rest. Guess I didn't read your "About Me" section. That was why I was worried about going with my original name and just having my explanation in the "About Me" section - didn't know if people would necessarily go there.
Minnesota Mom - you are too funny. If you've seen Karen Edmisten's explanation it is funny too. Like yours - not much to explain!

And some of your blog names are so cool! I'm having fun reading them. Some of the them the sounds and alliterations, etc. are just so...so...SO!
Keep posting reasons -- it's fun to read!
