Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So many great books--an embarrassment of riches!

Our state alphabet book is "C is for Cornhusker."

Two other great alphabet books are "America: A Patriotic Primer" and "A is for Abigail: An Almanac of Amazing American Women," both by Lynne Cheney. Great illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser. (Also great is their book "Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America," inspired by a trip taken by Mrs. Cheney's grandchildren.)

I love the Lynne Cheney books. They are great. Just got America: A Patriotic Primer (almost new) for 50 cents because the library was selling it .

Oh my goodness - this book is so much fun! We just discovered Discovering Nature's Alphabet.

I love the dedication. It's telling of the tone of the book. One dediction is to the author's mother, "who taught him how to see things differently." We have been talking, at our house recently, about the habit of observation - really looking at what is around us. When we really look we often see amazing things.

The idea of this book came from a hiking game that inspired the authors to slow down and observe the details in nature. They were at a national park and saw a tree that looked like the letter "Y." Then they noticed another and wondered if they could find the whole alphabet in nature. They found that these nature hunts really piqued the interest of children.

The pictures in this book are amazing (think The Butterfly Alphabet) and it immediately got me looking around the yard for alphabet shapes in natural objects. I think this will be our summer project. Stay tuned for our pictures as we search for the alphabet and post on our blog.

A great combination of nature study, language arts, and photogrpahy!

Okay, I have a new favorite in our house - just purchased yesterday at the Real Learning conference from Catholic Artworks....An Alphabet of Catholic Saints by Brenda & George Nippert. The pictures of the saints are just beautiful, and accompanied by some very cute poems about each saint. The boys in my house are just enthralled with it.

Cindy,

This is such a lovely book isn't it?! My children love it too and I have given several as gifts and always hear back from the parents how much they like it!

Just a few I didn't see mentioned:

For preschoolers, although X,Y,Z don't have their own rhymes, "In A Pumpkin Shell: A Mother Goose ABC" illustrated by Joan Walsh Anglund is cute.

We really liked "B Is for Bethlehem: A Christmas Alphabet" last Christmas.

My girls also like identifying things that 'start with the letter' in the "Usborne Farmyard Tales Alphabet Book", although we're moving up to Animalia, which I saw recommended already.

*EDITED 10-19-07 TO ADD*
Quilt Alphabet is a fall-themed alphabet book with riddle-poems that we just discovered.
A Prairie Alphabet is another one we just picked up from the library and is about rural farm life.

Not sure if this made the list....no time to check

Eight Hands Round: A Patchwork Alphabet by Ann Whitford Paul

It describes in words and pictures, 26 different quilt patterns, placing each in historical context.

Picrues are lovely, words are lovely.

Great thrift store find

Also good for those who like picture books about quilts......like me!

We just discovered The Book of Shadow Boxes - A Story of the ABCs. Each page has many items that begin with that letter of the alphabet. The accompanying text rhymes, and then the little ghost narrator (not scary) asks you to find something in particular on that page.

And in the midst of our Colonial America studies, we found D is for Drums: A Colonial Williamsburg ABC by Kay Chorao. The younger kids loved trying to make the shapes of the alphabet with their bodies as shown on each page with dolls.

I just revisited this wonderful old thread as I make a booklist for my preschooler this Fall. So many great finds!

I also thought I would add a lovely one I discovered recently at a used book sale. It looks to be out of print, but the used copies on Amazon are reasonable.

All in the Woodland Early by Jane Yolen

I think it is a must for the nature lovers in need of a new alphabet book! There is a running poem/song throughout and each letter introduces a woodland creature.

So, it's been a couple years since any new alphabet books were added. Have any recent favorites or oldies not mentioned?

Rachel May wrote:
This week we found another good one: Alpha Bravo Charlie: the Military Alphabet by Chris Demarest which teaches radio code words and flags. My favorite was "E Echo Elite para-rescue forces egress from a C-130 Hercules."

Second this one...love the code flags that are included.

Also found this one which also includes the international code of maritime flags on the inside front & back covers. Great "K" page with lots of different knots featured.   - T Is for Tugboat: Navigating the Seas from A to Z

This is going to be the richest treasure of a post on this board. I was happy to revisit some of those old suggestions and add them to my wish list!

ABC3D is very cool. Just a cool, cool book to look at and hold and admire.

The Hidden Alphabet is another innovative book... a fun visual exercise for kids.

New also are some very bright, fun visually striking books by the American Museum of Natural History, perfect for toddlers:
ABC Animals
ABC Oceans
ABC Dinosaurs

And I'm not sure how we missed some of these gems:

Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks from A to Z best and cheapest board book ever!
ABC Bunny. Who doesn't love Wanda Gag?
Museum ABC is so very lovely and educational.

Two delightful phonics based Alphabet books are Abadaba Alphabet and Doodling Dragons.

Abadaba comes with a CD read by Jim Weiss, and Jim Weiss also reads the app version of Doodling Dragons. I think that Abadaba is a superior picture book with richer illustrations and more entertaining text (written in rhyme), but Doodling Dragons is also fun and uses all the sounds the phoneme makes, so it is perhaps more useful as an educational tool.
