That gives me an idea. Perhaps we could use this thread to suggest topics we want to discuss and the proper place for them to turn into lengthy topics. It might be helpful for new members to get accustomed to how and where new threads are born. For example, I could see the door open for many, many fruitful discussions here. This would be helpful to me....
Welcome, everyone!
I would love information on this.
Btw, my name is Maria and I have 4 children - Isabella age 9.5, Juliana, age 8.5, Sophia, age 7 and Joseph, age 6.
This year, I'm schooling everyone and I feel like it's more a way of life than a method - does that make sense?
Does anyone else ever feel that way?
Anyway, I'd LOVE to hear more on dyslexia...I believe my daughter, Juliana, may have a slight case of it...but I have not had her tested....this is just coming from my mother's intuition.
Thank you in advance...
By the way, you Oregon girls....are you anywhere near Sandy, Oregon? Dh wants to move there and we're looking for housing....

My name is Melanie and I live way up in Alberta Canada. I am a convert to catholicism (1998) and have been homeschooling for a few years.
I have 5 children: 6, 3 1/2, 20 months and twins born 3 months ago. The twins were a huge suprise and blessing to us, as we found out we were having twins 12 hours before they were born, and they came so fast that daddy delivered them at home on the bed before the paramedics came!! |

Hi Melanie!
My husband and I vacationed in your area of the country last summer, we were in Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff for 10 days (my first vacation without children in 25 years:) It was just beautiful! We actually saw more snow in Jasper in August then we've yet to see this winter in PA We have twin sons also, they are five, and we knew we were having twins at 12 weeks, I cannot imagine such a surprise! I admire you for getting out with all the children, it took me a long time to get to that point. So glad to meet you

Oh thank you for the encouragement!! I never even thought that they could start helping with that process! Great idea Just need to wait another year or so. For now, I'm sure I look comical climbing over seats in my long skirts buckling everyone up... and of course the babies inevitably start crying before I even start on the older kids. What a spectacle we are right now!
What we really need is to get ourselves a bigger van, because our five carseats don't fit very well at all in our little odyssey. My dh wants one of those big huge ones, but i'm not sure how I would ever park that thing!!

Molly-
The Marine museum was WONDERFUL!! My 6 yr old son didn't want to leave when it was closing and asked the very next day if we could go back. All our kids really enjoyed it as did my dh! The quotes around the walls in the lobby were all chosen by our good friend's brother Col. John Ripley (who is a Vietnam hero....google the Bridge at Dong Ha if you have any military history buffs. Amazing story! Beyond amazing..miraculous! And he attributes it all to Our Lord and Lady!) His older sister goes to our church and is the dearest lady. We became good friends with her when she discovered that dh is a prior Marine and now they swap Marine stories! ) We did not know at the time that he chose them, but when I was telling her about our trip there and how the quotes were all our favorites, she told me that he had picked them!
Well, I'll have to keep in mind that the Catholic bookstore is not large enough for lots of kids next time we get up that way. Catholic shops are the first thing I look for whenever we are in another town. I miss that part of NoVa too. Now having my OWN bookstore would be a dream come true! Oooh, I'd love that. One of my longterm goals for volunteering at church is to open up a small religious goods store in the fellowship hall!

I love that area! We are spoiled being so close to the rockies. A few weeks ago my dh and I rented a chalet (think nice condo) in the mountains for two days with all the kids and we had so much fun! I'm sure it would be even better to do that without the kids. We rented a cabin near lake louise for our honeymoon seven years ago and that was just about the last vacation we had without the kids.

Since we've had the twins, I have been amazed at the ammount of women I have met who also have twins. I can't imagine the boys being five!! then I would have to start teaching them how to read LOL. Is it more challenging homeschooling the twins?

She cried every single day and lost all her confidence, poor little mite. The school were hopeless and did nothing to help. It was a Catholic school, and all the staff were Catholic, but given that only one other child in her class of 32 came from a practising family, it was fairly irrelevant. Hi Doris! When I was in university (pre-husband days), I flirted with the idea of becoming an elementary school teacher, so I took some classes at the catholic college. I was shocked to find out that I was one of 3 people in the class who actually went to church regularily... and the other two were protestants who were taking the class for interest!! Right then, I vowed that I would homeschool my children, because I didn't want these classmates of mine (their future teachers) being catholic role models for them!!
There is a very good private catholic school here, btw, but i didn't find out about it until after I started researching homeschooling, and by then I was hooked and wasn't looking back.
Besides, I can't IMAGINE sending my oldest off to school. She's my only helper in the house during the day!!

Well I can't resist a good chat! I have Ghirardelli chocolate to share. . oh and Disaronno if anyone would like smidge in their tea ;-).
Hi all I'm Michele. I have 10 children ages 21 years to 1 month. 7 boys (ages, 21, 20, 17, 14, 12, 5 and 2) and 3 girls (ages 10, 7 and 1 month). I live in the same area I was born in though we moved around a bit because dh was formerly in the Army (2nd son was born in Germany) and we're seriously thinking about moving somewhere else (suggestions welcome - we're open to anything).
Dh and I got married our senior year of high school. We didn't exactly start out on the right foot but God has blessed us nonetheless! Hey Lisbet I don't have a higher education degree either. I went from high school senior to mom in about a month's time. Overall it hasn't really been a hinderance I'd say.
Life is busy. Only 4 of my children are "officially" homeschooled (which means they are the only ones I have to do paperwork for since compulsory school age here isn't unitl 8). Besides homeschooling I help dh lead the RCIA program at our parish and I run a tiny home business. I love to sew and knit (in that order). I also love taking pictures and am getting better at it as I practice more (gotta love those digital cameras!).
I guess I'm an old-timer since it was Elizabeth and I that originally started the CCM list. We went in different directions a while back but are still friends and I appreciate these boards and being able to keep in contact with so many of you here.
I'm really, really trying to do better at fulfilling my vocation as wife and mother. I had gotten pretty lax about it and much of the conversation here has been helpful to me to make a renewed effort. Dh and children are certainly appreciating it!
Well I should get ready for bed. Enjoy the chocolate - it's my favorite and dh makes sure we always have some in the house (what a guy!)

Wow! This is fun! I brought my favorite tea, STASH licorice spice. Since I'm coming here late, I can't remember all of the things I wanted to say. I've enjoyed meeting all of you and getting to know some of you better.
I honeymooned in Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia. We went to Banff and my wish to see Lake Louise in person came true. It was perfect.
A little about homeschooling. My oldest went to preschool when he was 4. Then I started homeschooling him for K, which was easy and fun. Last year we built a house, had a baby and moved and I don't really remember if we homeschooled. This year I'm feeling like Julia. I am wondering how to work it out with 2. My boys are learning to read at the same time... We do take turns like someone suggested, but I feel like I get frazzled daily at that point when all four people want me at once.
I'm still trying to find homeschooling friends for my children to play with, and for me. Is anyone here from Western MA?

Hi Julia! I have a bunch of friends in sk but they mostly live in regina. We've met them through FAMILIA (study on jpii encyclicals). Are you freezing over there today like we are??
Yes, the twin story is amazing, but God has blessed us so much with lots of help, meals, clothes and prayers. I feel so peaceful and happy about the whole thing (most of the time LOL).
Thank God that the delivery was ok. So many things could have gone wrong -- especially because john paul (the second one ... ha ha! John Paul the second, I never thought of that before ) was breech... not to mention that my dh doesn't know anything about delivering babies or twins or premature ones at that!!
Did I mention that they were born on the feast day of the twin saints Cosmas and Damian? What a neat coincidence!!

Wow! Coming in late (par for the course for me - I have only two children, but I struggle with the seatbelts, too. And sadly, 4 - almost 5 - dd will be in a booster it seems until she's 18 as she is just a little toothpick).
Now, I hate to arrive late and bring with me discord - but I'm going to have to weigh in on the pannetone discussion. It's not heavy like fruitcake - but it does have those dreaded raisins. So, just when you're taking in the savory sweetness of the airy bread - chunckiness of chewy chunks - you bite into a raisin. Now, to find pannetone w/o raisins...that would be...hey...next time I stop by I'll whip up a pannetone (sans raisins) - I do believe it would go wonderfully with either coffee or tea.
Me, as I'm staying up waaaay past my bedtime tonight, and trying any pregancy recomendation whatsoever (three or four more weeks, and it will be Chinese and Mexican food here. Coupled with long walks, raspberry tea and whatever other wives tale to induce pregnancy), I'll have a cup of Traditional Medicinal's Pregnancy Tea (Thanks Christine! ).
Lisbet - I wanted to chime in and say pleeease don't ever feel intimidated. I always look forward to reading your posts as they are most often filled with widsom that no one would ever find inside the walls of any university.
Jenn - You are SO NOT whiney. Please!
Alice - I should have mentioned you first, my apologies. But thanks for hosting this little (okay large) get together.
Michele how do you find time to do all you do? I am in awe with all you seem to get accomplished. I have (restarted) sewing lately, and love love love photography. Sadly, the tripod dh bought me last year as a Christmas present has been taken out but a few times. And the lovely flash attachment (also a 2005 Christmas present) for my Digital rebel is nearly unused . Not that I haven't been taking pictures, I think the count may be in a distant second to Alice's!
How do you all find time? I would love to have a clean house, to read and play with my children, feed them nutritional meals (well, okay, feed them THREE nutritional meals a day), and explore my own many interests but I rarely have time to do the first three well (I have a part time, work from home job, too).
NOT that I'm whining. I'm not. I love being home with my children and my dh and I often laugh at those who "snub" me for "just being a housewife/stay at home mom" . Joke's on them, IMO.

LOL, no need to mention me, Christine, but I had to laugh because this "little-okay-large" gathering is reminding me so much of one of our real life gatherings here on Long Island!

I'm Jennifer. I live in Kansas, and this is our second year of formal homeschooling. My two oldest went to our local parish school first, but when my oldest was in third, we decided homeschooling was what we should do. We have a lovely parish school, but homeschooling is lovelier.
My dh has had several major surgeries this past year(four), so it has been stressful to say the least!!!!

NOTHING like fruitcake. Read Tomie dePaola's book "Tony's Bread" the fictional story of panettone. It's the lightest, bread, with raisins and fruit but just so delicious. I don't like fruit cake, so I promise I'm not steering you wrong.
And Elizabeth, how in the world do you have any left over? We bought 5 panettones over the Christmas seasons and none are left. We sent 2 home with mil because she can't get them in Altoona. She loves it! |
|

I think I have demonstrated my intelligence....I successfully re-quoted the quotes above, had to think about it though!
I tried my very first Panettone on New Years Day! A lovely Italian lady had given it to me as a gift when I sung for New Years Eve Mass - it was great with lashings of cream poured over it. (I hope isn't viewed as a sin by Panettone connoisseurs ) Between the 7 of us, we knocked it off in 10mins so I can understand how you can get through 5 in the Christmas season, Jenn - no apologies needed!

An hour ago while drinking a cup of hot chocolate , several roof shingles fell to the ground with a loud crash! It is very stormy here and I thought I had left a window open upstairs... Our roof is over 50 yrs old and the shingles are made of clay, and not insulated!
So hopefully the roofer will arrive soon - AH! here he is
It is so wonderful getting to know you all.

Steph, glad the roofers came in a hurry! We had a windy day yesterday...I was observing how windy days always seem to be on trash days. Those empty cans rolling in the street, boxes and other trash blown all around. Glad there is noone getting me on video all the times I run out and chase down these things!
Christine, I'll duke it out with you. I love the raisins. I really dislike candied fruit, and panettone doesn't have that. But my one sister dislikes the raisins, too. When she eats something with raisins somehow her plate has "raisin fall-out". We tease her that it is a mystery!
I have my niece age 9 visiting us this week. It's been such a joy for us, and I'm getting a little taste of scheduling schoolwork (she h/s and brought her stuff). Ds (age 3) adores her and wants to be with her all the time (and on her, and hugging her, and tugging her, talking with her, you get the picture). But her presence really inspires him to do "older stuff" and calming him down. And we read together a long book and he really enjoyed it. I can see how teaching two can be a challenge, but it's nice, too.
