Oops, I forgot to mention that Johannes-Paul Stephan was born while we were in Austria (and I was 41!) -- he was named for the Pope and St. Stephen, patron of Vienna. He (and the rest of the clan - except for Joe) got to meet the Pope in 2003, just before coming back to the States. Now, that was a moment that will live in infamy!

Well, I'm late to the party, too - as usual. I have been reading the thread faithfully though. I didn't have any refreshments to share - had run out of my Celestial Seasonings Chai Tea, but stocked up today. So I can offer that tonight (or really this morning - as you can see if you read the post times, I'm a very late night owl at least one night a week). Speaking of Celestial Seasonings, their factory is near here in Colorado. They offer a wonderful, very educational tour so if you are ever out this way I'll take you up there.
I've been on the forums since they started two years ago - had been on the CCM list for only a few months prior to that. I first heard about it (and Elizabeth's book) when MacBeth came and spoke at our conference in 2003, but it took me a year to actually join. I still feel new since I know some here have been acquainted for many, many years.
I have 4 children. The oldest is a freshman in college this year. The next one is a sophomore at a local Catholic high school. Both of them went to school for a couple years until we pulled them out to homeschool. They were home until high school. I am sensitive to the fact that I am one of "those people" whose children homeschooled 'til high school. I think it is very individual for each family and each child. It was a good decision for the two boys. The sophomore has geometry with Mary G.'s husband, Dr. G., and he teaches "Catholic math" - it's great! Don't know what will happen with the younger two - they have been homeschooled all along.
I am fortunate to live in an area where there is a lot of Catholic homeschooling support and friends, and it's a wonderful place to be Catholic so my needs in being involved in this forum to find people who share the same type of homeschool philosophy in addition to being faithful Catholics. There are a few IRL friends here who share that philosophy (you know most from this forum) but most of us live pretty far apart and don't get to see each other all that much. This forum is a great source of support for all the homeschool, Catholic, real learning connections I want. My favorite thing about 4 Real Forums is brainstorming and finding out about resources and ideas from all of you wise, creative, and resourceful folks. I feel like I'm not very good at "chatting" on lists or forums. To me that is easier in real life - but I'll try a little harder here as well.
There are so many things that people have said in past posts to this thread, but I just can't remember all the ones I wanted to respond to - this party is just so big!

Oh Mary I have to ask, have you been in the mint room?? I sat down and watch a Modern Marvels show a few nights ago with the children and it was all about tea. They did a bit about Celestial Seasonings and I was thinking of all you Denver ladies. It was really quite interesting (that show always is!) and made me want to drink tea all the more. . .as if I don't drink copius amounts already!

When Stephanie and I get our families together in Cologne, I'll take lots of photos and post them on my blog (with your permission, Stephanie, of course). Anyone else care to join us for a field trip to the Cathedral? (don't I wish!) 4Real hits Europe!
I'm really looking forward to seeing you, Stephanie, especially considering that 18 years ago we prayed together in the same small chapel three times a day for three weeks! I'm trying so hard to remember you---did you have long, blond hair? You can find my photo on my blog (link is below), though I've aged just a wee bit since then ---do you remember me? I was very quiet and shy so I probably did not make much of an impression.
The connections that have been made in this chat are amazing.

I have a medal. It was a gift of MaryM. PM her . |

The only place I have found them is from the Shrine in St. Augustine, Florida. You can order them from their store. If you call them they will send a price list brochure. They have both sterling and aluminum medals (in two shapes - oval and shield) as well as statues, holy cards, and rosaries that have OL of La Leche image. I just checked the shrine's website and they now have a product listing which is pretty new (but no prices). If you want specifics PM me and I'll give you the listing and prices I have which I believe are still current.

Yes, Michele, I have - it's an eye-watering, nasal clearing experience. My 7 year old does not like it at all and won't go in anymore.

Wow, Mary that's a GREAT story. You should write a book!
I'm a party crasher too. I've enjoyed reading this thread. We better be careful or it's going to get even longer than the infamous "Tights/Boots/Modesty" thread!
So.....how about a glass of chardonnay and a piece of "Death by Chocolate Cheesecake"....any takers?
We live in the Seattle area, but I'm originally from Minnesota/Wisconsin. We have four little girls, ages almost 6 and under. I learned about Cath HS around 1997, during a renewed interest in my Catholic Faith. When I met dh in 1999, we talked about HS during our engagement and of course, he thought I was crazy. Needless to say, he's more of an advocate of it now than I am.
I read Elizabeth's book last winter, while I was beached on the lazy-boy preg with dd #4 and loved it. I lurked on this board for a long time, soaking up everything; you are all amazing. It's the first place I go when I have a question or am curious about something....searching the archives is a goldmine!
I am so grateful to be at home with my girls, and grateful to have all of you to "chat" and learn with and from!

I'm right there with you!
But now I'm curious, just where in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area do you hail from? I was born and raised in St. Paul, and moved up by Mille Lacs 3 years ago.

Grew up in Forest Lake, MN...which was the boondocks then...now it's pretty much a suburb of the Twin Cities. I went to college at UW-Eau Claire, and worked at Bombardier/Ski-Doo in Wausau, WI until I moved to Seattle in 1996.
My parents had a cabin in Brule, WI during my childhood. And, then later up near Pelican Lake. So, I know Mille Lacs!

Hello, hello everyone. Great party...
I can't keep up with all the chat but it's lovely to see all these long-lost friends being found!

So..... that should give y'all some things to chat about! |

Gosh, Mary, what a story! I just quoted the bits above because I too am a reformed working mum -- long story, I thought aloud about it on my blog-- thank goodness I finally got the message that I should really be at home which meant that I could also get the message about hs.
see you all soon...

My thoughts Elizabeth. I love reading all the stories - with a tall glass of iced water until I can stomach tea again.
I am feeling left out with all these high school/college online reunions - so I am going to throw out some of my schools in the vague and unlikely hope that there is someone from the many places I have lived:
Saint Andrews Secondary - Malawi (Africa)
Saint Dominics, Harrow (England)
University of Leeds - Leeds, (England)
Universite de Pau - France
I once did bump into a school friend from elementary school in Africa - when I was on the steps of York Minster!!!

It is so true! I was really getting envious and then YOU found me, Diane! I am so glad.
Yes, I did and still do have long blond hair, usually in a pony tail.
When the hurricane weather blows past us and the Cathedral is still standing, we will make a date .
