Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Now when I lived with my p's after undergrad and we lived in Aquia Harbor (just south of Quantico) there was a sensational barbq place in Stafford -- is it still there? I'd go back to NoVA for that! It was one of the few places in that area that had all locals and no Jarheads !

Then I went to William and Mary for grad school (MBA in Marketing) in '86-88 and never went back....a shame really as I have a brother and his family in Alexandria!

BTW, why are y'all up so late -- I'm up because I have Thomas and Maggie and JP in bed with Rick (he puts them to sleep with reading) and since I'm going to sleep on the floor tonight, I'm avoiding it as long as I can.....

Mary- I was wondering the same thing about you when I saw the time on your post! For me, I'm just enjoying the silence.

Hello, ladies. I'm back after a few days away from my computer. This party has been very busy. I've brought some chocolate chip pumpkin muffins to share.

I didn't realize you graduated from O'Connell, Molly. Now I feel really old because I taught at O'Connell for the two years following your graduation! (Of course, I was a VERY young teacher back then, hardly older than my students. )

Hi Anne,
I am at St. Veronica's. Dh has a brother and sister-in-law at Holy Trinity. Do you know any Starrs?

There is also a Buon Appetito in Chantilly (same shopping center as the Catholic Shop) and a Ciro's in Centreville which I believe are run by friends or relatives and have the same basic food -- delicious, authentically New York pizza (I grew up in Brooklyn) and wonderful meatball heroes/subs. The sauces at some of those places seem to vary a little from each other but the basics are overall the same in my experience. The pizza IMO just cannot be beat in the DC area, and my lifelong Brooklynite mother said it was the best meatball hero she'd ever had.

We love Buon Appetito! In fact two priest friends of ours met my family there for lunch a few days ago. It was great to see how well we were treated, just by being in the company of two men of the cloth! Normally you walk up to the counter to place orders and pick up your order. This time one of the brothers who own the place came to the table and served us. I was very impressed because he remembered our family, and we hadn't been in there in a year or more. (Dh always picked up carry-out during that time.) The owners' mother was visiting from Italy, and she enjoyed holding my 3 month old. Funny thing is, I remember her holding one of my other babies during another of her visits to the U.S. a number of years ago now.

Mary, you arrived at W&M in '86? We just missed each other. I graduated (as an undergraduate) in '86!

Wow, thanks for the invite Alice. I'm relatively new - as of summer before last but I blab so much that I've been posting quite a bit . We have 6 living children - 19 yo girl, 15 yo girl, almost 13 yo boy, almost 11 yo boy, 7 yo boy and 4 yo boy. We homeschool all and have since our 19 yo was about 4 - but knew we would homeschool from the start. I heard about homeschooling from my baby sis who started with her son now graduating from the Naval Academy - probably one of the first Catholics in our area to homeschool. I heard about this forum from a 4realer from Australia. They were visiting in AL and we kept them from the space and rocket center after they identified a small group of us as homeschoolers and we got to chatting and had them over for breakfast ---- . They kindly sent me the link and for the first year I kept the e-mail so I could click on their link and get here .

I have to apologize for being late (but typical for us - in our family we set gatherings about 30 min. before we hope to start just to take care of the laggards) - but I must admit I initially thought this was a reference to some list group or fancy computer thing that I wouldn't understand . It is such a delightful conversation so I'm glad I poked my nose in just to see. There are so many conversations going at once and I love it - just like one of our family gatherings. Of course who is saying what is sometimes running in my mind but I'm trying to keep everyone straight and hope you will excuse me if I stumble over names at first! I just finished reading all the posts and will have to go back and forth as time permits. This could be a huge temptation to stay around and chat (overstay the welcome) and dash around like a nut trying to make sure my duties are attended to. I absolutely must find the 4 yo belt tonight or there will be meltdown before Mass tomorrow morning.

May I offer either pecan pie (southern style), chocolate/peanut butter candy or chocolate chip cookies. Is there any milk and sugar for the American/English teas. No problem if there isn't - I drink it with or without depending on the tea. Goat's milk cheese - now that sounds heavenly! MacBeth, I'm so glad to know someone keeps a pot of coffee going. I love the smell of a pot brewing but have never been able to actually drink it. First time I tried coffee was a concoction put together by some college friends from LA (special LA coffee popular among the New Orleans crowd - cannot remember its name but it was supposed to be quite potent) who were going to help me keep awake to study for some crazy final (of which I remember nothing). It had its effect about 2 days later and I was literally bouncing off the walls, I was so hyper. Anyways, if I ever get a chance to host, I'll have to have someone help me with the coffee machine - to this day I cannot figure out where you put the water, and which buttons to push. A college education does not help with the most important things, I promise! With homeschooling, as long as you have first things first like being a good wife and mother, the rest really does seem to work out somehow! The formal education did not help me with either of those essentials and I had to unlearn a lot before I could really begin to learn. I also have to admit that I have not ever read Elizabeth's book - but you guys have gotten me intrigued. Back when I started homeschooling, none of this was around and the first 2 homeschool books I bought just didn't really fit me, so I stopped even paying attention. Looks like I missed the one that might have fit!

Ah, I want to jump in on the conversation about driving the beltway. I don't laugh at all. I will not drive there or in CA or in Chicago or.... I grew up overseas and never really saw automobile traffic until I was in high school - and my first experience was my mom hitting the accelerator instead of the breaks other than a once per year mad dash through airports - switching from military to international airports by taxi with 16 pieces of luggage in tow after the mad scramble to find it, get it inspected and ... My dad was not a dawdler so we had very little time to make all these transitions. (So how did the rest of us become such dawdlers?). I had to learn to drive at 16 as my parents needed me to drive myself and siblings to school. I was terrified and remember distinctly saying I should have been born in the horse and buggy days as I would never survive this. My high school drivers instructor put 5 of us in a car and alternated who drove after showing us one gory film after another about what horrible things happen in car wrecks. (Not exactly what I needed at the time). I just remember the speed demon boys driving around narrow, hilly roads (for us mountains) at highway speeds and then I was the last to drive. I was put behind the wheel just as we entered the main, busy road with sort of overpasses and being told to get back to school. I was doubly terrified. First I had to merge at high speeds, then I had to figure out where I was going as I was so turned around, I didn't even know where I was or how to get back. I flunked the driver portion of the test but passed the course with a C because I made 100% on all written tests . That course, along with PE, ruined my GPA! But I love to ride and see the scenery as long as someone else is driving on any roads that require more than 35 - 40 mph - so Nancy, if we lived closer, I'd sure take you up on the offer.

All the talk about moving - aah. It brings out the wanderlust in me. I guess that was just my life as a child. Born in NJ, then to FL for a few years, to AL, then overseas for the largest part of my growing up and then back to AL. My dh, on the other hand, was born and raised in DC itself and most of it in the very same house. He, with a great deal of fear and trembling, accepted a job in AL - the job itself was just such a draw. That is when we met. Anyways, he likes to stay put so I imagine we are here forever and it is nice to be close to my mom and sisters and one brother - something rather rare now.

And Germany - it is so beautiful. I took picture after picture of the mustard fields as we drove by and the beautiful churches. (I had one business trip there before dh and I were married - a bit out of place among all the military when all I knew was what the FM said - and yes, I probably was the only employee who actually read all those field manuals while waiting for all the final paperwork to come in). I could do without the Autobahn speeds though! Are the guest houses still as wonderful - I remember the feather dusters being hung out to dry and the big breakfast of cheeses and breads and the old fashioned key - like a key to a castle! I wish my German was better - mine was all formal school book and grammar with nothing practical and it was a long time ago.

I've wondered if twins could still be a surprise now as my dh and I half hoped some of our bigger babies were unexpected twins - but then I probably didn't know what we were wishing. My brother's are twins - and my mom knew when the second one was delivered and like you, she says that it probably was just as well that she had no idea as the first twin was breach, she was 1 month early and ...My dad was the one that seemed most shocked - and my sisters and I because we always thought my mom sent us away and not that she really didn't expect the babies for another month and just needed a short week breather.

My dh just came down, so I guess I'd better go and visit. He's a bit baffled at how I can talk so much to you ladies - (probably how I can talk so much at all) but I think he'll know when we actually meet many of you. Please excuse me for talking so much - I'll come back and just listen for awhile too.

Wow, this is beautiful. Oh, to have a best friend like Alice...I think everyone should be so blessed!

Amen to that!

Oh, I should I introduced myself. I am Jenny and my husband and I have 5 children, girls 7, 6, 5, 15mos and 1 boy 3yo. We live on a small farm in OK. It is 360 acres and we have 18 alpacas and one goat named Dinner who is about to become dinner. Well, I don't know if we will actually eat him or not, but his days are numbered. We do not own the farm (yet). My dh went to school with a boy and we have become friends with his parents. His dad was raised on a farm & wanted a farm as a "get away" but he did not want to live on the farm or do any day to day. We wanted to live on a farm but could not afford one, so we pay rent on a beautiful home & take care of the day to day operations. What a blessing!

I have been here for a bit, reading everything! I do have to admit to a feeling of not belonging though. I do not have a college education and do not "know" any of you IRL. I felt like a 3rd wheel. Plus, my first couple of posts regarding home learning/home education...well, it was obvious I had not read Elizabeth's book yet    So I happily read the boards daily soaking up all the wonderful information, the beautiful crafts, the thoughtful book suggestions, and praying with and for you all.

I've been reading and enjoying this forum but was at a loss for how to join in. I can see the beauty and closeness in many of the relationships that have formed here.

I have 5 kiddos ages 1-8. We are moving in 1 week to a new place to be closer to family. And although I'm thrilled to be so close to my mom(s), sister and cousins, I'm a little worried about starting all over. Having to meet a new homeschool group, getting new friends for my girls, praying for at least one close friend for me, etc.

Not sure what else to say. My oldest is in 3rd grade and LOVES history! We're doing American history and I'm ashamed to say that although I majored in history, I never knew my dates like I'm now learning. I realize every year, more and more, that learning in schools is so superficial in that its a mean to an end, the end being tests. My dd is learning for its own sake and I can see it sticking!!!

And if it wasn't for homeschooling she would be completely lost! I'm coming to terms that she is dyslexic. I still find myself rationalizing that if I had done a better job she wouldn't be struggling with her reading. But she's actually making leaps and bounds and although I'm a vorocious reader and assumed all my kids would be too, I'm seeing my love of reading is helping her. I read most of her history and science to her. And some of her math problems and she loves these subjects!!

Now to get some confidence in being able to teach her to read. I would love to see a thread on that sometime!

Blessings,

Welcome, Lillian! I have been on CCM/4RL since about 6 mos after its inception......what almost 8 years?? This is my home, my favorite place to be, outside my REAL home. You are right, there is A LOT of beauty and closeness here.........and part of that beauty is that we have room for more! Glad you found us!

Your kids are similar ages to mine when I came to CCM/4RL. It was the best thing that could have happened to our homeschooling. So, you can use this haven as a "home" for you till you get settled in your new life. I will pray it goes well. DO come to us for support! What state are you living in?

I think history is the most favored subject here......probably because it is so ALIVE. I am also learning all of my history NOW......substantially more than I ever did in school. And, it is WAY more fun!!

I just want to encourage you: I am a voracious reader, too......and I assumed since I was hsing, reading aloud to the children from the time they were babies, and modeled it for them, they would all read well, and early. Boy was I in for a shock!! My earliest reader was one week before her 8th birthday. The rest were at age 9, 11 yrs.2mos, and 13+..........and I still have an almost 10yo struggling. But, all of the others have made it, finally. Phew!! It is such a tremendous joy (AND RELIEF!!) to see them catching on, and then up, and enjoy reading so much it becomes a discipline problem .....and funny, all of them, as soon as they were able, just HAD to read LOTR for themselves So, it all paid off, finally....though it was a long journey......and obviously not over yet! I will keep you in my prayers. Saint Thomas Aquinas has been a special companion of mine.

I think if you look up in the language arts forum, you will find some great threads on teaching reading, esp to those kids who are getting "older"......Angie has some great posts there! Let me know if you cannot find them.

Just wanted to say hi, while sipping my morning dose of Irish Breakfast tea .....Have a beautiful day!

It's a week later but I hope y'all will partake of some purple yam ("ube" -- pronounced OOH-beh, a Filipino sweet dessert) that my mother made for me before she went back home. It will go well with your tea and coffee, I assure you!

I'm Diane, mother of 2 girls, Isabel (3) and Elena (5), been married for 10 years, lived in the Philippines until I moved here 15 years ago, now living in Northern VA (St. Michael parish in Annandale), and I drive anywhere (thanks to my trusty GPS!)

We're new homeschoolers with only this forum as support. I don't know yet whether to look for a "real" group (the face-to-face kind ) because my needs are met by the wonderful ladies here.

My grand plan in homeschooling is to develop a curriculum for my children to learn anything and everything Filipino -- history, culture, literature, language, etc. I'm working on some readers right now, and teach reading in Filipino as a separate subject to my kids. If anyone else has done this, please, help!

(As an aside, Stef had raved when I mentioned that I live in NoVA, and asked if I've met Elizabeth Foss. I wish. But I can tell you that my daughter, Elena, who attend the same ballet school as Elizabeth's daughter, loved Marybeth as little Clara in the school's Nutcracker performance. After all this time, Elena is still holding on to that dream!)

Thanks, all, for sharing your thoughts and lives in this special venue.

Jenny - how nice to "meet" you and how lovely that you know the Boynes! I knew the Boynes growing up in Sapulpa, though most of the siblings are older than me and Kris is about 4 years younger. I don't get back to OK much but my mother and sister still live in the area and give me updates - so sad to hear about Craig's son! Do you know them from church? Tell them "hello" for me! Makes me wish I could get my Minnesotan hubby to move south! I have lived here for 7 years but OK will always be home.

Where in OK are you from and where is your farm?

We do know them from Church. As a matter of fact Laurie just called to check on us & I told her of our "conversation". She knew immediately who I was talking to. She says hello & asked for the link to the boards.

We are north of Tulsa. Although the city seems to be growing closer and closer. Our farm used to be a working dairy farm. 5 years ago the farmer and his family moved to the panhandle of Texas. He said if he wanted to continue to farm/ranch, he had to move b/c the city is slowly creeping in and all the land he leased for hay was slowly being sold for housing editions.

Wow, another Diane with a dd Elena, living in NoVa (where we lived for 6 yrs), trusting on GPS to guide her....my Elena thinks this is just too cool.

So glad you joined us here, Diane!

Jenny, Sounds like you are busy with a bunch of littles like me... i have 5 kids 6 and under and it's busy. I would love to have all that land for them to run around on. We have a little postage stamp backyard, and here where I live land is so expensive that we need to win the lottery to move out to the country (unless we go really far from the city and then where would my dh work??) I love the name of your goat. Very funny!!

Jenny, we live on a farm as well. We are grain and cattle farmers in Sk, Canada. I, too, feel very blessed that my children are able to grow up on a farm. They have a freedom that they would not experience if they lived in town or in a city.

I also wanted to comment on having a college education. I do have a college education. Believe me, it has not helped me in the least to educate my children. What helps me is my desire and yearning to learn. I can tell from your comment on drinking in everything that is said on these boards, that you have that same desire. In my opinion that is all you really need.

You aren't being nosy at all. I brought it up after all. Your questions are good ones. We have roots here, and we are in a good parish (and have pretty much free reign over RCIA). Yes, it's a pretty part of the country but Lancaster County isn't at all what it was 20 years ago and it's growing at an alarming rate. Traffic is a nightmare - OK not like LA or Seattle or D.C. but way more than what we are use to - and farmland is continually being lost to subdivisions. But hey that's progress right? And we are fortunate that considering how old this area is (Lancaster city itself being the oldest inland city in the United States) it's amazing that it's taken this long for such growth to occur. But it IS occurring and we (both dh and I) are longing for somewhere more remote...more country. The cost of living here has risen quite a lot and we would like to be able to buy a house with land...but doing that here wouldn't be likely. Maybe it's just wanderlust but what used to feel like home just doesn't feel so much like that anymore.

Well, Michele, I was hoping to convince you to buy the house up the street, but I am afraid it would just be more of the same situation. I do live near some farms, but progress has taken over most of this area as well. If Lancaster is getting too built up for you, I don't know if anything around here in VA would work.

Some of the neighboring counties, Madison for example, still have beautiful, open space. We would love even more to stretch out on. That would mean either a career change or a helicopter for commuting!

Good luck!
