A quick update on Thanksgiving Trees.
If you made one, I would love to see it -- I'd like to collect the pictures and put them all in one blog post.
You can email them to me at edfamily5 at yahoo dot com
Thank you!

Donna,
Whenever you want to get it to me is fine -- if I have quite a few before Thanksgiving, that's great, but if not, after is okay, too. It's supposed to be fun, after all, not one more thing that we have to get done!

We'll see if we can get one done and get to WalMart to get the photos developed on CD. I'm such a dinosaur!

Marianna and I are building a Tower of Mercy as we are studying the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy this week. Beginning details of the cubes are in my Thanksgiving Plans post.
Here's the line-up that inspired us, we've adapted a few already. Marianna prefers St. Elizabeth of Hungary for Feed the Hungry, can you blame her after all your beautiful posts last week on the feast day?
Corporal Works of Mercy
Feed the Hungry - Thea Bowman, Dorothy Day
Give Drink to the Thirsty - St. Frances Cabrini, St. Katherine Drexel
Clothe the Naked - Blessed Theresa of Calcutta
Shelter the Homeless - Sarah, wife of Abraham
Visit the Sick - Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha
Visit the Imprisoned - St. Therese of Lisieux
Bury the Dead - St. Catherine of Siena
Spiritual Works of Mercy
Instruct the Ignorant - St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Counsel the Doubtful - Mother Catherine McAuley
Admonish the Sinner - St. Therese of Avila
Bear Wrongs Patiently - Mary Magdalene
Forgive Injuries - St. Josephine Bakhita
Comfort the Sorrowful - St. Veronica
Pray for the Living and the Dead - Mary, Mother of Mercy

We are a family that loves lapbooks and have been making them for a couple of years.
After my kids make a book, they really do own the information that is inside that book. I see them carry the lapbook around for days, showing everyone and re-reading the information that they’ve collected. Clara made one this week and couldn’t wait to show Grandpa when he came to dinner.
Cindy Rushton lists some perks of lapbooking.

I know what you mean. I used to get mine done with the Walmart "online" option. I am LOVING my new digital camera. It was the most inexpensive one out there, I think, but it works!

Jennifer,
This is a great idea! You should move this to a new thread so that others will pick up on it, too. Maybe under Living Faith?

Margaret,
As Donna said, I think it really helps the info to sink in. I have loved the lapbooks we've done. And, my kids have gone back to them and "reminisced" about what we covered when we made them. We did them on Mesopotamia and Egypt one year, and on the Civil War.
The only problem around here with lapbooks is that I love making them more than my kids do. I love all the little pockets and flaps, and making little books to slide into clever storage areas, and on and on. My girls just haven't been as enamored of them.
Maybe it's time to try them again, though. Maybe an Advent theme?
Or, maybe I should just make my own little lapbooks at night after the children are in bed.

For all the homeschooling moms new to this Forum, (i.e. me , here is what I found on lap books:
Lap Book is a trademarked term used with permission from Tobin's Lab, Inc. www.tobinslab.com.
The first time I ever heard of a lap book was on a Five in a Row Yahoo group, so I had not actually seen one in person. When I had the opportunity to attend a seminar by Tami Duby of Tobin's Lab on how to create lap books, I was first in line. Lap books™ are a paper manipulative using file folders in which the student stores creative summaries of their work. The concept is similar to notebooking and some notebooking resources can be used in lap books, but the concepts do differ. Lap books™ are more than just notebooks with collections of worksheets, they are diagrams, minute books, and other paper manipulatives customized to emphasize the subject of the lap book.
Donna: your "Cranberry Thanksgiving" lap books were lovely!

I have found that to be the case with my ds sometimes. The trick with him, I think, is to pick the right time and subject matter. Sometimes ds is in a craftier mood than others, and some content just lends itself to lapbooking (or notebooking, which we do in lapbook style)more than others.Trying to force it always leads to frustration and inferior results.
The more ds does, the more he is able to do them independantly, which is also better than my hovering over every fold and paste!

Thank you, Margaret.
I'm not sure where I found this site...maybe it was here...but I wanted to share it with you. In the Hands of a Child is a great lapbook resource if you'd like to get started with premade lapbooks.

And In the Hands of a Child operates a Yahoo Group all about lapbooking.
Here are a couple other nice resources for lapbooking.
Mini-Books, Flaps, and Student Folder Websites
Creative Publishing
And in case new lapbookers are interested and haven't seen any old threads here is one of the more informative beginning threads.

Thank you for all of the links. We just made our first lapbook last week. It's a bit rough, but the kids really enjoyed doing it.

We just completed our first lapbook this week. The children really enjoyed it (and so did I). Thanks for all of the links. Even though I have been HS for nine years, I felt like such a rookie!
