Our family will continue to hold the Bruton family in our prayers. Eternal rest grant unto Betsy, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her family, friends, and all touched by her sweetness and courage, be consoled.
Love,

My heart is just aching for this family. I'm feeling such a heavy burden for them. I've put them on several prayer lists, asking for prayer for them. It was just so hard to read Theresa's words this morning that she wrote about Betsy's final moments in this world with her family. I know the Lord holds her now and that's wonderful, and we rejoice about that. But as brothers and sisters in the Lord, we feel the pain that this family is enduring, and our burden is their burden. Thankfully, we know that the Lord will help us carry our burdens, and we will become closer to Him through the suffering which we endure here as we grow ever closer to Him. Continuing to pray.

Theresa writes:

After a few hours of really good sleep, I am awakened to write again.
I hesitate to give you the full rundown of our last day with Betsy, because
it was a day I never want to relive. But there was so much love and care
given to us, and I want you to know about the heroes of that day. I want you
to know that in the midst of the pain, God was with us every step of the
way.
It started with a very frank talk from Dr. Hanna about the seriousness
of every problem going on in Betsy's body. He focused mainly on trying to
help me understand that her lungs were leaking, and that until we solved
that problem, the others didn't really matter. That's why we needed to try
the oscillator, because the present form of ventilation was continuing to
damage her lungs with its high pressure. I don't think I really grasped the
whole idea of where we had arrived, until I later asked Dr. Byrd some
further questions. He very kindly and gently let me know that if the
oscillator didn't work, we had no further options. The time to change her to
the oscillator kept getting pushed back, which allowed Katherine and I some
time with Betsy alone. By a miracle of God, Woody walked in. He's the man
who spends his days talking and singing to kids in the hospital. As he sang,
Betsy woke up. She took our hands in hers and squeezed with her fingers,
very purposefully. She moved her lips a little, and she opened her eyes for
Katherine. She loved the music, and all her numbers stayed smooth and even.
It was her moment of saying good-bye to us, though I didn't recognize that
until later. Shortly thereafter, the teams of docs and everyone moved in,
and we began the change over to the oscillator. I cannot give you the
details of this time, because it was extremely traumatic for me, and I don't
want to focus on that. I will say, however, that in the midst of the
changeover, an x-ray was needed to see where the air was, and as we all
filed out for the x-ray, the hall was filled with a gazillion docs and
nurses, all waiting outside her door. Dr Kaufman and Dr. Hanna were there
for me, and in his usual way, Dr. Hanna said, "I told you this was going to
be a hard day!" and they gave me lots of hugs and held me up until it was
time to go back in and try again. Woody sang us through this entire horrible
affair, and the docs kept their calm, as they put her back on the regular
vent and got her numbers settled again. We all knew we had hit the end of
the road. As we waited for Robert and the rest of the family to arrive, Dr.
Hanna came in again and talked with me, and let me know how the evening
would go. Eventually, I realized that I had to tell Katherine, and was
thankful to have the chance alone with her. But even as we cried together,
we continued to love our Betsy. The nurses very carefully rearranged her
lines so we could get in bed with her to be close. Meredith (Child Life) and
Debra (Psychology) spent the next hours with us as Robert arrived, and
finally Mandy and the boys. They helped us with our kids, as each one in
his/her own way came to a full understanding of what was about to happen.
Dr. Hanna also talked with them about what would happen, and gave them the
option to stay or go as they needed to. You cannot imagine what it's like to
watch your children grieve like that. But one by one, as they were able,
each helped to make plaster and painted handprints of Betsy along side their
own. Then it was time. I don't know how many people were in the room, but it
was a lot, and the room was filled with grace and love. I took her in my
arms in the rocking chair, and Robert read some Scripture. Then he led us in
the Lord's Prayer, and with all of our voices together, we prayed her into
heaven. Dr. Hanna then removed the breathing tube, and she quietly flew to
Our Lord.

I thought those of you who were following Betsy's story would like to read an article by my friend, Barbara, in today's copy of our diocesan paper. It's a beautiful tribute.
