What great posts!!! It made me remember this book that I used with my 2nd preschooler when I needed more resources right at my finger tips.
Each letter has the foolowing:
Read it! - bibliography (ex: A lists alphabet books, books about apples, books about ants)
Eat it! - recipe (a:applesauce)
Draw it! - (a: the ant - with directions to make ared ant, make a red ant on a green leaf, going uphill, etc.)
Write it! - (a: an ant on a big apple wit ha key to color and trace & write lines at the bottom.)
Make it! - (the patterns are provided)I would attach a narration of one of our reads to the bottom of this creation.
I took the books apart and filed the pages for each letter in a sheet protector. Each week I would pull out the sheets and run them through the copy machine.
This worked really well for us.

There was another blog that recently talked about preschool, too. And she hasn't even mentioned it yet!

Seriously, take a look at those two posts. I really enjoyed the crafting ideas she proposed. My own TeaPartyGirl (age 4.5) will SO LOVE that knitting tower. Especially if we go to the store and she is allowed to pick pink (or [gasp] sparkly pink) yarn to work with. I see a future with lots of doll scarves ahead...

I have used FIAR, Letter of the Week and Pre--school Express with my two oldest. This time around, though, I don't have the time or energy to do a formal program. This is the first year that I will be teaching two. I'm a little nervous at how this is going to play out. But I found a great idea at Dumb Ox Academy (http://dumboxacademy.homeschooljournal.net) It follows the Montessori philosophy. I have cleared off two shelves for my 3 yr. old. Each week I will rotate what goes on the shelves. I will put a few trays on with various activities. One tray might have a practical life activity, like grating cheese. Other trays may have a puzzle, sorting game, geogoard, craft acitivity, etc. She will do these trays while I am doing school with the older ones. I am hoping that I will have time to do some Before FIAR with her as I think it is a great program, but this is as formal as I get this year.

Because i have a kindergartner, my preschooler will just be tagging along. We're doing FIAR, Rightstart math and spell to write and read. And i think i might order Usborne's I Can Draw books for them. But that's it and she'll be involved for whatever and how ever long she wants to be.

Something my kids and I have worked on off and on is a nature alphabet book. Looking for the shapes of letters in nature or this could probably be done in town too. You'd be amazed at the amount of letters that are just forming all around you. Twigs in a pinch and be formed into letters too. The only down side is we're not able to stay with either upper or lower case letters -- we've had to be flexible -- but it's been fun. Actually, we left out some letters and should probably get back too it .
Theresa, I know you like doing nature studies and I thought this might be a way you could combine this with the alphabet.

Great idea, Julia! I once had my middle schoolers (in the public school I taught at) go out with a digital camera and take pitures for a poster on geometry in nature. They came up with some pretty neat stuff. I may have ds do that and perhaps dd do the alphabet one. Sounds like fun!
