Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Healthy Food on a Budget

Since we were talking about grocery budgets, it seemed this post I found fit in with the conversation. I haven't read through the 100 day challenge yet, but hope to glean some useful advice.

I have never figured out a grocery budget here, but in general it's "spend as little as possible" :) One thing dh is great about is buying things on manager's special. About half our food has that big red sticker on it! And he buys all they have when it goes down. Often the price is 1/3 the normal price. Or course sometimes he buys way too much of something weird, like 10 boxes of Gluten Free Matzo crackers (0.99, normally $7.49!!) but it turns out they're about like saltines. Most of the stuff isn't even near the expire date, I guess maybe it's just not selling and they decided to dump the product. We get all the bread and bagels this way, day-old and it's fine.

We do some garden but our big savings is on meat. I raise enough of chicken or pork for us and enough to sell to cover our costs so we basically have free meat for just the"cost" of labor. That's not realistic for most here, but checking out those manger's specials can really pay off.

We just refinanced to a 15 yr mortgage, so our monthly payment is about to go up $400 a month So unless I want to get a part time job I guess I'm going to have to start budgeting everything!
