Julia it's hard to be excluded from family events. It was quite pleasant when we moved to where we are to have the weather (and so bad roads for traveling) as a convenient excuse to stay home for Christmas. I would say that you need to give yourself a bit of time to mourn any part of the gettogether that you might have enjoyed and then build anticipation in having your own Christmas at home. Plan out what you want to do. Knowing the plans and being able to anticipate is a great deal of the excitment.

We have stayed home for Christmas 25 of our 27 years of marriage. I love it, because we have created our own traditions (down to what dessert I serve, apparently, as I found out last year when I tried to make a change!) and we have plenty of time for church events on Christmas Eve.
I know it's hard to be in your situation, and I'll be praying that you'll find ways to make Advent and Christmas happy and special in your cozy home.

Same here. We love the traditions which have evolved in our own family as we've observed Advent and Christmas at home. Our extended family isn't Catholic, so our home really is a safe haven when it comes to living the seasons mindfully. And now my mother comes to spend Christmas with us, here in Catholic-land. I'm sure she never, ever, ever envisioned herself spending every Christmas Eve in the company of a priest! But this is where all the fun is . . .
All that to say, you never know how or when opportunities to build bridges and minister to others will arise out of your own family rituals and family nurture. It can hurt to think that others want to have the party without you -- I remember being taken aback one year while we were still living in our hometown, when we invited my in-laws for Thanksgiving only to be told that they were all going to the beach without us. Oh . . . okay . . . And here I was trying to reach out to them! Couldn't they see that?!! In the end, though, it was kind of a permission to go ahead and do things our own way, as well as a little object lesson in personal humility.
Julia, I will offer my day today for you and your family as you begin to consider how you'll "rebuild Christmas" this year. I am sure that however things unfold, they will be rich in God's grace.
Sally

Happy birthday Sally!
Wonderful news, Jen! I will keep you and your baby in my prayers!
Julia, the traditions that my family are creating during Advent and Christmastide are so precious to us. and ...what Sally said above
Jenn, the butter making is so easy. Much easier than socks. The only tricky part about socks is the heel. But I tell you, if I can do it you can do it 10 times!
You just need a good teacher.

We also feel that celebrating at home has really made the Nativity so special for our family as our larger family has a very secular Christmas. It was hard at first but we have seen how peaceful it can be...

Jen!! I am so very overjoyed for you, dear friend! I can't tell you how happy I am!!! Praying sincerely for good health for you and baby, as I know how you've said how difficult the first months are. Praying with empathy, but also with great joy for your family during this time. I hadn't even seen this post or known about your *wonderful* news until my Mom told me this morning, while we are enjoying a spur of the moment visit with my family. How could one of the dearest ladies around, such a great, wise and precious gift to us all, just sneak in this news on a Wednesday Shout Out!?! We consider it a privilege and a joy to add you to our list of Expectant Mothers our family prays for each day!
Unfortunately, things have been to busy at home to join in these Shout Outs. Our business has been keeping us incredibly busy, as well as caring for our ever growing, young family, and trying to make sure I keep my head above water with homeschooling in the midst of it all! Your are all in my thoughts and daily prayers! Praying you all have a blessed Thanksgiving, as well as Advent Season!
