Lasagna Gardening worked wonderfully well last year. The newspapers did as promised and I had almost no weeds. But what do I do this year? It's not like I'm going to pile that load of compost and peat moss on top of newspapers again. The beds don't need that much buildup. And, as my dh pointed out, the newspapers won't work without being buried under significant weight of dirt. So, what does one do to the lasagna garden the second spring? Oh, and I did nothing last fall. Well, no gardening...I had a baby last fall.

Hi Elizabeth,
I also started a LG last year... this year I am just going to add more layers of leaves, peat, grass etc... but not the newspaper. I layered over existing weeds, grass, briars and it has worked great. We are making a "secret garden" and will try to extend it this year. So far it had 2 entrances. A tunnel made with grape vines and a teepee tall enough for kids to walk through that we grow "Jack be littles" on. It's a mix of veges and flowers. Quite small so far, but a work in progress.  We love S. Lovejoy's books!

Elizabeth, just keep piling the stuff on top of your existing beds. If you need to, pull the weeds, they come out of the beds REALLY easily. Then mulch over the top with whatever you have around... leaves, straw, compost...

But if I don't have anything around--leaves or straw or such--what should I go get? Another couple of layers of compost??

We are going to add a few inches with peat moss and compost. My layers weren't 24" last year but it kept the weeds down well anyway.

Wow, Elizabeth I feel like I am you a year ago. I was reading through the posts planning on pming you to see how it all turned out. I am exactly like you as I read the book (LG) and hear people say to just add whatever is around but I have nothing around! :) I am going to start a compost pile for next year but I will look into buying compost at the garden stores for this year. I just wondered about what types to buy as in the LG book she talks about alternating the layers with different organic material. Did you put up just some stakes and string around the layers? We are on a very tight budget for this project so I can't really afford to make a wall or anything like that. I'm just going to start with veggies and maybe a 1-2 flower beds. Do you have to start with seedlings? My 3 yo asks every day when we are going to make the garden so I want to start asap but am feeling overwhelmed with so much info!
