Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Along the cutting up books line... all right, I confess. Not only have I cut up books, I also have put books straight into recycling- and not just books that are ripped, moldy, etc. If I find a book that is particularly stupid or offensive, in other words a blight to picture books in general, into recycling it goes. I guess that makes me a

I love the idea of having the print sitting out visible all the time, but how would you do it with a book? Hmmm...

I can't believe I'm giving ammo to THE OTHER SIDE!!! But, I do have some art print books that are special that I'm not willing to cut up. As I said, I ONLY do this with cheapies or duplicates that are NOT special. Anyway, you can display an image from a book by using a good book stand and setting it out on top of a shelf, on your desk, kitchen counter, table top somewhere. Book stand is the solution to this problem though!

Demco - Economical Wire Book Stand/Easels - come in a variety of sizes, some of them big enough to support a very tall book!

Demco Plastic Book Easels are also very nice.

I have SEVERAL sizes of both the clear plastic book easels and the wire frame ones and use them ALL.THE.TIME.

I guess I should confess that I have had this pinned on my Pinterest board for a while.

Some books are so far gone, this seems the best use.

However, I have books that I've specifically bought to cut out the pictures, and it is HARD to do. Even if its a stupid book, otherwise.

It's hard for me to think outside the book.

Reminds me of the part of Charing Cross Road (book and movie -- EXCELLENT) where she wrote scathing letters since they were using old books for packing material. But they explained it was the War, couldn't use new materials, and these books were no good because they were in pieces.

Now I use some books as function -- pressing pages, leaves, step stools and booster seats.

I'm firmly in the "can't cup up books" camp here. I've bought many books I meant to cut up then when it came down to it I just couldn't.

There are also bookshelves made from actual books! Don't know if I like or not

OK- but if you can recycle newspaper or magazines, if you can cut up advertisements or catalogs and reuse them.... it is not much of a hop to cut up books for your children's education.

None if us would cut up a treasured book, but if you rescue an old coffee table book from a yard sale or thrift store, a book that nobody was looking at or enjoying, why not work with it?

I admit that it took me a long. time. to get over the horror of cutting up a book. But what Jen said was so true: nobody was looking at them.
They were huddling in my house to no purpose. I felt a bit at their mercy- didn't want to cut them up, didn't want to store them forever, no one was enjoying them.... so out came the scissors

I do see how this is very reasonable maybe I just have to GET STARTED WITH ONE and then I won't be squeamish about it anymore.

Yes, who knew this could be sooo polarizing! Ohh...I wish I could, I wish I could...I just might. I love Jodie's idea about getting the binding removed. It would make it seem less like a book.

That's what I was thinking - books that aren't being used, duplicates, used, worn out ones that I wouldn't use for anything else. Certainly an idea to keep in the back of my head. I don't currently own any books that I could cut up, but it's something to keep an eye out for in yard sales or used book stores...

The book stand is a great idea. I was thinking I don't have a good place to put an open book, but then I looked out and realized there's a small bookshelf that is at just the right height - short enough my kiddos can see it and tall enough that my toddler probably can't reach it. :)

YES!!! I did this just last week and it was even a hardbound former library book! I found it so repulsive (and it was for middle schoolers) I didn't dare leave it laying around for my DD so it actually went straight to the garbage!

Here's another idea from the blog Melinda sent over about spy gadgets. I clicked on their link about how to make a secret booksafe and lo and behold...check out this quote:

"A side note: I know there will be people who cry foul at this project-arguing that cutting up a book like this is sacrilege. I personally don’t understand that kind of fetishization of books. Books are not intrinsically sacred. These are generally books that no one wants and will otherwise go to waste. You’re not destroying the book, you’re turning it into something else. There’s value either way."

I think my big kids would love doing this. I have plenty of hardbound Reader's Digest books from the 70s!You can read the entire post and project here:

How to make a Secret Booksafe

And be sure to read the comments! Some are verrry funny!
