I just have to say that my children were reading over my shoulder and read your post and were in shock. I then proceeded over to the book collections thread and showed them all the books you have at home. NOw they are a bit green with envy!!!!
BTW We are doing a tour of EVERY SINGLE library in our system all 47 this year and we are having SOOOO much fun! This week we even took a train downtown to the Main Branch!
Oh I guess I should confess that we spend A LOT of time in the library and don't buy many books but we have an incredible library system.
I'm with Mary, currently having close to 200 books and videos out. Off to watch our India video for I week!

Oh that is too Mary!
One of these days, I hope I get the courage to try that too
p.s. Ever see the movie "Harold and Maude"? One of my Mom's favourites. That's what they do..go to other people's funerals whom they've never met before.

And I meant to come back and confess the time we finished administering a standardized test to one of our boys in the parking lot of a Denny's (in Iowa I think) so we could mail it in as we started our vacation (didn't get finished before we left... )

Great thread! SO love the peak into "real lives of homeschoolers" that we all have...Theresa--your Airplane movie confession made me laugh: the other night during the family rosary I was trying to get the kids to get prayerful and said "Assume the prayer position" which in my head made me think, "Assume the Crash Position" (from airplane) and I was laughing so hysterically--as was hubby! SO sad that I cannot share that movie with the kids--too many inappropriate parts but oh my some great one liners.

Great thread! I must admit I'm still posting with trepidation:
My true homeschool confessions:
- I have had too many books/materials that I bought and then didn't use.
- I'm still wishing someone would turn on my NATURE button because I haven't loved the outdoors since high school, and thank goodness my kids love the outdoors themselves, or else they would be dead now from lack of Vitamin D, I am THAT lazy about taking them outside and sunning/airing them :D
- There are days I'm too busy with MY projects that I just let the kids do whatever they want.
- If I could just stop paying overdues I'd probably be able to afford the home improvement projects we've been wanting to do.
- I hate bugs.
- We starved our fish to death. And I originally got the aquarium because it's supposed to be relaxing for kids to watch the fish swimming around, but unfortunately no one wants to look at dirty water, dead fish and fish poo while having breakfast, so now the light is just off and we pretend it isn't there.
- I'm so good at planning, that I still have all the plans I made for now-20-year-old and in college, because I just know ONE day I'll actually use them on the kids.
- My desk is messier than my kids'.
Okay, going to hide now for a year or so or until people forget I was ever here.

My husband can recite the entire jive talk scene, but I've only ever heard him do it.3 times. Still, it's an impressive talent to pull out of your back pocket when needed.

I confess to having BOUGHT a ton of coffee table books with the intent to use for the same purpose as well as to make our own beautiful gift-giving cards and wall art and yet...I.CAN'T.DO.IT! My hand with scissors canNOT make me cut those pages up. The thought to treat books respectfully must be so deeply ingrained I'm not sure I can ever cut something up that has been bound.

This is pretty funny. I'll add a couple but I've not been homeschooling that long but here's a few:
1) We went to Disney World about 1 month after we started home schooling and I considered it SCHOOL! And I still firmly believe it was SCHOOL!
2) I really like homeschooling so I don't have to be held accountable to the teachers and all that busywork they throw at the kids (read: us). And I *love* that we're in TX and have no paperwork to muddle through. It would probably drive me to madness.
3) DH was home today and building me a new laundry hamper and I was only oh-so-thrilled to allow them to go to "shop class" instead of doing math and reading with them!
4) If my DS reads anything (street signs, road signs, banners etc.) while we're driving, I can consider that he "read" for the day because it can be so exhausting helping a struggling reader.

I have a few sitting in the bottom drawer of my coffee table with some GORGEOUS art that I really really want to cut up, but I just CAN'T!
And letting my daughter do paper models of animals today counts as math and science, right?

This is where I'm at, too! I've been putting off going back for the past few weeks because a)giant fine and b)broken Hank the Cow Dog CD... and one of the librarians is a HUGE Hank the Cow Dog fan who personally stocked the entire series on audio! If I set foot in the library, I'm afraid I will be blacklisted forever! (Or possibly shot on sight, this being Mississippi...)
Ok, so confessions...
**When it's warm enough, I let my kids go outside in the morning barefoot and in their pajamas so I can actually sit down and eat breakfast.
**I let the little ones watch Curious George and Magic School Bus in the mornings so I can eat breakfast and if anyone asks, it's science.
**I don't actually tell anyone we like unschooling; instead I say we are "free spirits" or "relaxed". It seems to work like a code, because the other IRL homeschoolers I know will say things like, "Oh, well, you have a baby, don't you?" and I just smile and nod.
**I let my kids bring all sorts of bugs in the house. Sometimes they even set them on the table while they eat.
**I have bought books only to have the kids tell me we already owned that book.
**Doctor Who is an integral part of our homeschooling.
**I like using reading workbooks.
**I'm a writer, but I still have no idea how to teach writing.
**The bulk of our science "curriculum" often consists of NOVA and the Science Channel. (Right now we're recording Rocket City Rednecks. )
Needed this thread this morning!

WE LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!! These fellas are our neighbors! This is OUR BACKYARD! GREAT-GREAT application of science! And lots of redneck humor, too!!!!!!!! We are HUGE FANS of the Rocket City Rednecks! We laugh our rear ends off watching that show!! And, by the way, that's really how it is around here - a lot of country-sounding folks with multiple engineering degrees and IQ's through the roof!
**NOTE** This serves as an official warning for anyone reading --> Preview this program BEFORE you show it to your children. GREAT/FANTASTIC SCIENCE! INVENTIVE -- EXCITING -- ENGAGING -- TONGUE-IN-CHEEK HUMOR!!! This program is a little edgier than Discovery channel's Myth Busters. There is some language. If you're sensitive to some of these things THEN THIS IS NOT the program for you.

YES! Except, I have that conversation with MYSELF as well as other homeschoolers Looking in the mirror, "you have a baby, right..."
And, I really did have a dream last night where there was some man associated with the public school system who was questioning me, I smiled and gave a vague response about liking unschooling (in addition to other things--dreams are vague anyway, lol) to which he responded VIOLENTLY, and I started yelling at him. Then the dream changed to something else, and I don't remember it, but I was vehemently defending unschooling. It wasn't until later in the dream that I realized I should have talked about Charlotte Mason instead of unschooling. It was SO WEIRD.
So, confession: I DREAM about this stuff
