Sometimes I'll get on a kick where I watch that show a lot. I love Stacey and Clinton! I really need them -- Stacey would honestly have my head on a plate if she saw how many turtlenecks I own but I love turtlenecks! And I actually saw an episode where they tore a lady apart for wearing the exact same RL blazer that I have hanging in my closet
My only problem with the show is that I'm so much more modest. I don't like to wear skirts above my knee - even when I'm sitting. But I'm short so They really don't look that great on me in the length I like. Also DH doesn't like long skirts on me (I should really get rid of the ones I still have).
I also don't like dresses, so I end up usually wearing a pair (one of two pairs that I own) of slacks and a top (usually a T-neck) or not so flattering skirt and top to church.
Oh and I guess I'm wearing stuff all wrong anyway because I mainly have patterned skirts and solid tops... I guess I have some work to do!

Oh no Servant, how embarassing even if the advice is good
I meant literally that some tops if you lift everything up "properly" won't fit.. buttons pull apart or fabric pulls or whatnot.. and to go up a size means the arms where the sleeves attach are halfway down your upper arms or the neckline falls off your shoulder..
And it's not just.. oh it must have been a cheap top, buy something better.. most of the time it's the better things that fit even poorer because they fit for the large band size and small cup size better.. which makes an even worse fit.
Not that looking and feeling better and wearing better fitting bras doesn't make a woman look better.. BUT it doesn't maker her clothes fit better necessarily

Thanks, Jodie! I like the idea of adding a bit at the neckline...that would really make it look like a different colored piece belonged at the bottom of the T. I think it might work to use the older T-shirts that are stained down the front and cut the bottoms of to attach to the newer, short shirts. Then I could use a piece up near the neck as well. That would be nice on a lot of my v-neck t's to make the top a little more modest as well as the length.

Ah- the faux-layer look. Brilliant
I just have to add that whoever invented the concept of layering tees never lived in the south in the summer.

Thanks for all the help ladies! My dh asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day. I think I'll tell him I want the book, It's So You. I'm hoping for a bit of time this weekend to get to my closet. Last night DH and I went to a RTL dinner. I was pulling things out left and right to try on and nothing fit right. I know it's because I'm nursing but it was very frustrating. At least my pants fit! They're just in need of an upgrade, not a size change. (I'd be even more happy if they were too big! )
I've also discovered that my favorite skirts just don't fit like they used to. I hate to give them up because they weren't cheap. I got them from Orvis about 5 years ago when I wore skirts all the time. Trouble is, they add about 20 pounds to my hips which I don't need. Sigh.
Anyway, thanks for the inspiration to dive in to my closet. I'll let you know what I come up with when I re-surface!

I've never seen that show Angie. It sounds like one I need to watch. Wear did you go on line to figure out all the above? |

Becky, I don't remember! I just tooled around and found myself in a WHOLE world that I have never visited before . I just googled and googled and followed leads and...was done in about an hour. I was on a roll!
I love the idea of the book and am especially interested in the 8 item wardrobe. I'm also still a bit shy about accessories, although I was very proud of myself when I wore a cute stylish necklace with my yellow shirt at Easter .
Hmmm....maybe we should start a topic called, Wardrobe Victories! I think I'll do that right now...
Love,

Wardrobe Victories!
Oh, another thing I picked up from "What Not to Wear" (WNTW) is that I need to be willing to alter clothing. I think I avoided that option in the past because I thought it was too much work...duh! It is SO much more work to shop and shop and shop.
Yes, WNTW doesn't focus on modestry but none the less, they do meet women where they are at and they have many middle-aged ladies on the show. Plus...I've been reconsidering what "modest" means or looks like. I think it can be tempting to say I'm dressing modestly (which can turn frumpy and unbecoming in a flash) when I'm just being...lazy and not wanting to put the time in to look good for myself and others. I admit it! I was able to look cute and get away with some fashion weakness when I was younger, but now, I owe it to love my neighbor and try to present as pretty a picture as I can .
And...YES on the SMILE! As I get older, it is more and more important to smile - to uplift my face and spirits!
Love,

My daughter wants to go in on a copy of It's So You with me! It's on my list for sure, and when I went surfing around online, I actually googled the book and found her website. There's another site, StyleStrong (I think) that had a lot of nice tips for over-40's. I'll have to go look at my web history to see where all I went -- can't remember now.
Angie, where did you go online to analyze your body type, etc? That's the kind of thing I'm always looking for: something that says, "You look like this, so wear this!"
I'll have to find What Not to Wear, too. Wonder if they have episodes on Hulu? We don't have a tv . . .
Running out the door, but loving this conversation!
Sally

Something I was just thinking.. the activity we do also will effect the choices of wardrobe.. like.. you're short.. you should wear a knee length or higher skirt.. but they don't mention things like.. but if you want to wear a skirt while doing house work and yard work, you need be to able to bend over without exposing yourself too. Not at all.. they'll tell you don't wear a skirt.. which isn't very helpful. Or if you always wear skirts to church and you have a toddler standing between your knees.. knee length or higher can be rather revealing
I guess sometimes it feels like fashion is so focused on what looks best.. they miss that helpful line where fashion meets practicality.

Youtube has several full length What Not To Wear episodes.... but you have to refine your search for clips longer than 20 minutes. Also- watch out for the episodes in Russian!
I have a TV but no cable....

I have two books I find fabulously helpful with clothing questions. One has been mentioned here already: It's So YOU! published by Scepter Press is a wonderful book and I especially love her emphasis on thrift, wardrobe planning, colors that suit the individual, modesty and elements of personal style. I've read a lot of books on clothing and few have excited me, this is one of two books I recommend to friends who are into modest AND stylish.
It's So YOU! has saved me a great deal of time and money too. Because it helped me recognize that a particular color I like did not fit with the other colors I wear I did not buy fabric in that color but chose another color instead. When I make a skirt or top now, the colors must go properly with what I own so that I don't end up putting hours into a lovely skirt that will NOT go with more than one top and which would lack flexibility for that reason.
I felt let down that there was little in It's so YOU! about particular designs, such as the various styles of skirt and which bodies it suits best, her chapter on this was inadequate for me but it is a small deficiency easily mediated by my second favorite book.
The other book has a terrible title that has little to do with the actual value of the book: The Science of Sexy focuses on body type and the CUT of clothing. This fills in the missing elements (from It's So YOU!) by discussing at great length the body types and heights and weights and which necklines, skirt designs, etc. are best for each.
The second book in particular has enabled me to find patterns that are good for me and saved me a lot of time and effort sewing-- knowing that a high neckline will never look as good on me as a nice wide V-neck (modest still--none of those plunging necklines for me!) means I do not waste my time and money making one of those darling tops with the mandarin neckline that I think so pretty--and which is horrid on me. The down side is that this book says little about color or wardrobe planning.
I find the two books complimentary.
