Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had this little epiphany today while folding laundry (which I'm technically still doing--what, you can't fold laundry and type??? ).

I've long lamented the loss of little boys wearing gowns and dresses as babies and toddlers. I love putting those little gowns on my newborns--it just makes diaper changes so much easier, and I'm guessing that part of the reason little boys once wore dresses as toddlers was because it made diaper changes so much easier as well. Then, when they became mobile, the gowns were "shortened" but they were still in gowns for some time.

As I folded holey things, it occurred to me that it was not that long ago (less than 100 years I'd guess) that boys wore "short pants" and it was a sign of maturity or a coming of age when they got to wear "long pants."

Now, I'm not sure I would subject my children to such anachronistic dress as much as I'd like to, but NOW I GET IT. I never got the boys in dresses thing until I tried to potty train, and now I totally wish I could make my boys wear short pants until they were old enough to not spend fifty percent of their time on their knees playing

Oh the wisdom that gets lost with fashion

Excellent point... makes lots of sense.

The gowns thing is definitely a money saver. You had baby clothes, not gender specific.

Didn't the short pants go over their knees?

I think they came down long enough to cover the knee when standing.. which would mean when kneeling that they would not cover the knee.

There's a line in The Music Man in the song about Trouble "as soon as your son leaves the house does he rebuckle his knickerbockers BELOW the knee?"

In addition to socks and pants, we have a problem with the toes of shoes wearing out (probably from all that tree climbing). Which I don't notice until we're headed for church and my 7yo's shoes have the TOES visible! Embarrassing!

The Sears Kidvantage club offers replacement (same size only) for kids' clothing and shoes. Jeans/socks/shoes wear out? Take 'em back and exchange for new, as many times as needed! Doesn't apply to online purchases though, only in-store. But make sure you keep the receipts!

I'm old enough to have put my son (now 19) in newborn gowns...they really do make the most sense.

And here's another vote for Kidvantage. We didn't use the program too much, but it was nice to know it was there.

Hear Hear! for the shorts until they're old enough to not wear holes in the knees! And loved the Music Man reference about it!

Same with girls, too...the skirts used to get LONGER as they got older, because they were behaving more ladylike and wouldn't trip on them...wish THAT were the trend nowadays, instead of seemingly getting shorter and shorter and shorter! I think remember a reference in one of the Anne of Green Gables books about someone trying to act older by wearing a longer skirt. Wouldn't that just be a TERRIBLE thing to have to deal with??

I DO put my newborn boys in gowns, though, i t isn't what people gift these days, so, I only have a couple, and they are small, so it's only when they are teeny.

I do like the baby legs to put on when they get older, though, so I can avoid pants at home, but I'mafraid that doesn't fly well in public

I love the gowns and sacks for small babies too.. but they don't work so well for carseats.. so when we go out it's jammies with legs but at home.. definately gowns.

I like the socks we got from the boy department at Target and especially at Ollie's shoe store. Hope that helps!
